OK, can anyone tell me what animal flew in Sputnik 2 in 1957? It was one of the first animals to fly in space.

It was a dog. Really, sad actually.
The dog, Laika, was chosen from 10 candidates due to her even temperament.
She died just hours into the mission, but Russian scientists
Knew she'd burn up upon re entry anyway and they were prepared to give her poisoned food prior to re-entry

Great job SolarPower, although she actually lasted about four days but died when the hurridly built satellite's cooling system failed. They were prepared to poison her as you said since they knew she wouldn't survive return to Earth. Sputnik and Laika sadly burned up on re-entry.

The space dog is mentioned numerous times in an excellent Swedish movie from 1985, "My Life As a Dog". A boy in difficult circumstances tells himself that his life could be worse- for instance, he considers Laika the space dog's predicament. I saw the movie a long time ago- but I recommend it!
