The Tryout Process
For the 2000 birth years, the tryouts will be over three days, comprising of 3 x 3-hour sessions. Cost is a one-time fee $75 whether players attend one or all tryout dates. It is NOT mandatory to attend all tryout dates. However, players are HIGHLY encouraged to attend all tryout dates to ensure the best possible evaluation(s) for acceptance to ODP.
For the 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 & 1999 birth years, the tryouts will be over two days, comprising of 2 x 2-hour sessions. Cost is a one-time fee $50 whether players attend one or both tryout dates. It is NOT mandatory to attend both tryout dates. However, players are HIGHLY encouraged to attend both tryout dates to ensure the best possible evaluation(s) for acceptance to ODP.
Birth Year
Fort the first tryout, boys and girls will be split by birthdates. Players born in the first 6 months of their birth year will be separated from players born in the second 6 months of their birth year. We recognize the difference in competitive experience of the boys and girls trying out and we cater for realistic vs. unrealistic expectations in the initial stages of the tryout process. We have one eye on the present and one eye on the future soccer player. Nature must take its natural course.
Player Positions
Players will be divided by position for the first tryout (i.e. goalkeepers, full backs, central defenders, outside midfielders, center midfielders, forwards). They will stay in this group for the first tryout. For the second and third tryouts, players will be placed onto teams.
Format
Boys and girls will be evaluated on their technical execution in the skills of the game:
Receiving
Passing
Dribbling
Shooting
Ball Control
Shielding
Crossing
Turning
Running with the ball
Tackling
Heading
Goalkeeping
Opposed practice will be evaluated in the following:
1 v. 1
4 v. 4
8 v. 8
11 v. 11
Staff
There will be 2 NTX ODP staff coaches per 16 players. One staff coach will organize and run the session. The senior staff coach will evaluate/grade the players. The staff will be relaxed, player centered, and helpful. At the tryout stage, no coaching/instruction will be given so we can see if the players know and can do the tasks assigned during the tryouts.
The Mission of North Texas ODP
The purpose of the NTX Olympic Development Program is to identify and develop the top players in the state, in partnership with the competitive clubs and teams statewide. Our focus is player development. Working together with our competitive leagues, clubs and teams, we complement each other and, through this process, the level of play within the state is impacted in a positive manner.
NTSSA ODP is an opportunity, a pathway, for elite player development.the "best of the best" in the state. Participants will be challenged technically, tactically, physically, and mentally, playing at this higher level. Gifted boys and girls will learn on their feet, play quicker, and be on their toes as every facet of their game will be stretched. We aim to elevate the game of the truly elite players.
Like a pyramid we start with a big base a strong foundation and have a large pool of 100 players. From this pool we select four teams. Each year we reduce the teams from four, to three, to two, to one as the boys and girls mature. "The cream rises to the top," only the gifted with the right drive, desire and determination to succeed persist and remain.
ODP provides an efficient, yet relaxed, environment where the truly gifted players will excel. The program is player development, not results, oriented. Practice is deliberate and progresses from simple to complex. Games are high level. The coaching staff is player centered using a soft approach, few words, 'one ounce of theory to a ton of practice' with lots of praise, clear, concise, simple, and honest feedback, with no shouting. Young players are given opportunities to make decisions, solve problems - we give them cues/clues not answers.
We have found, over the years, this developmental approach speeds up learning to create the best all around experience. The list below is an example of just a few players over the years that have benefitted from this program:

They say no team gear but at every practice or event I attend there are lots of club logos on bags or water jugs... Maybe if Ntx doesn't want team apparel then they should offer a Ntx soccer bag, water jug, etc for purchase or just incorporate it into the fee's.

what a great suggestion for NTX! Have you forwarded it to Dave Luckey yet?
I know my DD got happy when they offered the sweatshirts this past winter so that I could stop seeing so much logo stuff on the players.

Here is the link ODP FAQs
http://www.ntxsoccer.org/players/odpfaq.aspx
1. How is player eligibility determined?
Eligibility for ODP is determined by the player’s birth date, not their soccer year. A child born in 2001 or younger is not eligible to try out for the 2011/2012 seasons. A release is not necessary from the player’s Club team to participate in ODP. Players born in 1994 or older are considered to be “aged out”. Therefore, they are no longer eligible to participate in ODP.

I have thought about mentioning it. Just didn't know who to mention it to. My DD likes her sweatshirt also

Per their website, ODP will start training sessions for the '01s in the spring to prepare them for tryouts next year.
ETA: Well, it had been on their website. They keep changing stuff in the ODP section.

There are many instances every year of a younger kid making an older ODP squad.
Take her out. Worst case scenario, she gets experience for trying out next year.

whatsup wrote:I keep hearing that ODP is political. How exactly does it end up being politicized?
It's too difficult for people to admit the truth when their DD doesn't make the cut, so they look for external reasons to explain their DD's lack of talent. One would be that she really didn't want to do this anyways because it takes away from her time on the debate team. But since there are coaches out their from various clubs, then it is easy to say it is all political. You see, Coach X is from Club X and he took this girl that happens to play for Club X and not my girl who happens to play for Club Y. It couldn't possibly be that the other player is actually better.
Are there politics involved? I'm sure there are at some level. But if it was all politics, then it would be so transparent and nobody would be involved with it at all.

Re: ODP Open Tryouts Announced
She didn't make it her first time out; however, she worked very hard and didn't give up and made it the next time around.
And it had nothing to do with anyone else but her going out there and standing out to get the attention needed to make ODP.
Now, there are some instances where I have heard strings being pulled...but people always come up with some kind of story.

I would say that the politics of ODP don't come till later in the process. Local pool is not where the politics happen. It is much later in the process with camps and regional pools and national pools.. just my .02 cents.

We were late because the time was moved from 4pm to 3:30pm and didn't change any info on their website. The only way you knew is if you didn't wait until the weekend to register like I did.
I don't think they were handing out shirts in sequential order. It sure didn't appear that way. There was a 16 number difference between my DD and the next DD in line. Heard of other cases too. A few of us estimated around 150-160 around the 330p mark. Not sure how many showed up after that. Was a decent showing but I've heard there have been larger showings in previous years.

Not knowing what to expect, I assumed there would be about double of what was out there.

That would my only complaint. Signed my DD up in July, gave her shirt size YL, got there around 240p and she got a AM as that was all they had left so they said. She'll have lots of room to grow into it!
