College Recrutement

This post has become so quite I figured I needed to throw something out there that might generate some discussion! (I know this is a boring topic - maybe I'll create another topic that gets people fired up!)

Alright, what's going on with college recruitment? Being in the 96 group I'm assuming most girls are Sophomores. Many of you have girls playing ECNL.

Without bragging - what do you know or what have you heard regarding the following questions?

* When do colleges start approaching girls? I've heard it's there Sophomore / Jr. year.
* Have you or anyone from your team been approached?
* If so, what level are we talking about? Div. 1 / Div. 2 / Div. 3 (I'm curious of Div. 1 teams are hitting the ECNL teams)
* Do colleges attend High School games anymore?

Hopefully, this will generate some discussion!

Being a player who finished college a year ago and am now coaching at collegiate level it depends on what level in some cases how early the recruitment process starts. D 1 schools especially the big schools may start recruitment as early as freshman year, and some even commit by the time their sophomore year rolls around. However if you play D2, D3, NAIA although they may recruit a few years ahead you can be recruited later. I played D 2 Soccer and was recruited my senior year, a little bit my junior year. A lot of it is getting coaches to see games, writing letters/emails, maybe sending highlight clips, sending out game/tourny schedules. Majority of players that end up playing weren't just found by coaches they pursued the schools they were interested in by contacting coaches early and often.

Few college coaches attend high school games, some local coaches may at time, but generally more of the talent is found in club soccer and is generally a better pool to recruit from. I knew a few of the local colleges in the North Texas areas came to watch certain players when I was in high school but it was an NAIA or smaller school. This is not typical though. Most players will be seen in club not high school. Talent pool in high school sometimes too diluted.

Here are the coaches that attended our ECNL games in Phoenix over the weekend. Important to note that this was in the middle of the college season. Turnout is typically much higher. At some of our ECNL games last year (freshman year) we saw 30+ coaches.

Saturday:
Clemson, Nebraska, Missouri, Wyoming, Denver, Westmont, Liberty

Sunday:
Nebraska, Boise St, US Youth Scout, ECNL scout, Oregon, Ohio State, Pepperdine, North Carolina, Miami, Georgetown, Houston Baptist

Monday:
Missippi State, Boston University, Virginia

So lost on this college recruiting thing...what steps should my DD be taking this year (sophmore), what should she be doing next year (junior)????

We had 10 of our players commit to college in between their sophomore and junior year. You need to be calling coaches and letting them know where your dd is playing. Your coach should also be making phone calls on your kid's behalf.

I thought coaches could not contact players until their junior year of HS. Keeper?

coaches are not allowed to call or contact players or their families. You can call a coach every day and twice on Sunday's if you want.

The coach from Pepperdine has on his voice mail reminding people of this rule and says that if you missed him, keep calling him since he cannot call you.

We visited Pepperdine this summer, beautiful school and great people there!

They cannot reply to e-mails or texts. You have to call them and you have to reach them. You have to keep trying. If they never answer, then maybe you should move on to the next.

The key is to have a coach that will work the system. If you are interested in a school, have your coach call to guage their interest. If they are interested, have your coach set up a specific time to call. We are fortunate that we have a coach that worked hard to find homes for his players.

Not sure on texts, but beginning Sept 1 of your Junior year - they can email.

That is correct but keep calling. This is a 96 thread. I doubt if many are juniors.

I had my dd keep a call sheet on the computer and she had to call each interested coach at least once. The schools she was interested in, she would call until reaching them. It was important to our coach to call the schools she was not interested in at least once to insure an open communication pipeline for future recruits within the club.

To reiterate, until the junior year, the coaches cannot make the attempt to contact players or player's parents (except thru the club/high school coach). The college coaches spend as much time recruiting as they actually do coaching, they do talk to kids on the phone, they do show up at games, they do take the process seriously. And honestly, they're probably overwhelmed by kids wanting their attention. But stay diligent. It pays off. Here's the list of college coaches who attended our ECNL games in San Antonio (Feet 96).

I hate to take anything away from the "ecnl love a thone" but you really ought to check your facts before making such authoritative posts. The "coaches scheduled to attend list" included 138 coaches. Only 102 made it to the Feet '96 games.

Don't ya hate it when that happens? Better get to the altar.

You're right. There is usually a lot more coaches there than are listed in the scheduled to attend.

I am definitely someone who's yet to make up his mind about ECNL, but there's no questioning the exposure these events offer.

My daughter is only a freshman-97 so please excuse the intrusion on the 96 thread. I can agree and support what has been stated regarding the college coaches at the San Antonio event. We had 56 coaches attend the games from the the top-elite programs on down. As a first timer at an ECNL event I was surprised.

There is a pretty impressive list of coaches signed up for the FC Dallas Showcase. In full disclosure, there will be girls/boys games, ODP finals, ECNL and Club games. Agree not all coaches sign up. My dd is a sophmore and started her initial contacts freshman year. She is looking at/being looked at more from smaller schools that we think are a better academic fit. The coach for the one large program she is looking at/being looked at by frequently does not sign up but does come to games where they have talked. So, if you have dialog with a coach who is not signed up, still send information and your game schedule because they may well come anyway.

The Spring Classic cancelled this year. Maybe not enough interestwith recent changes for this established tournament?

On the TCU front, heard many of the verbals have had their scholarship amounts changed and at least one player has pulled out and is now going to Baylor.

Just leaving a DD visit with a DII school and a 95. Coach said you are only holdout, give me answer please in 1 - 2 weeks, at Dallas international I am looking at 96's. This is a DII coach. So DI is definately at 96 level maybe younger, so email them , e mail them ....and here is the key I found that some don't do. follow up when they attend a game. DO you have a champino that talks to them and gives them your info? Don't assume they will create action they may have seen 50 interested girls. Keep your name high, ask for visits and yes until you are a Junior pre start of school is first time they can e-mail you. NAIA give you lots of love and conversation because they can, doesnt mean a DI or DII doesnt love you until an e-mail July of soph-junior year, then life starts to change. STAY TIGHT ON THE PROCESS!
