The triple dog soccer dare Empty The triple dog soccer dare

I heard this on the radio. The basic premis is any parent of a youth soccer player dreaming of scholarships making the scariest calculation of all.
Calculate the gross soccer expenses for your child from age 5 to 18. Then compare that to the 100 most lucrative full scholaraships your child could be awarded. They figure the chance the dollars work in favor of a parent are the same as one of those full scholarship children making the national team AND winning a world cup.

Dare to do the math?

I think most intelligent soccer parents are quite aware of this. It about the journey.

First of all starting the count at 5 is ridiculous . If they were not in soccer they would be in something else, perhaps cheaper, perhaps not. If you start the count when they go select and start serious travel then that would total 7 years. Universities go from say 20K to 50K per year. Times four that is 80K to 200K. Even if your averaging 6K a year on select then if you get 50% financial aid between soccer and academic at an "inexpensive" school then you have recovered your money. For most though that is not at all what it is about anyway. You could make the same argument for any activity that is pursued to its higher levels.

We are not in soccer for a scholarship. That's my dd's dream, but not her parent's. We're in this - AND WE SPEND THE BIG BUCKS - because she loves the game. We love to watch her play. We love the sense of confidence and accomplishment she gets from being good and getting better. We love the time management skills she learns from juggling practices, social time, and homework. And there is no amount of money I wouldn't pay to give her those things if it was in my financial power to do it. Lucky for us, it is. But don't make the lump assumption that all soccer parents think that we will end up with college money. That would just be icing on the cake.

The triple dog soccer dare Empty Snacks

Post by DDPlays4Snacks 30/03/12, 05:22 pm

DD is in for the snacks!

Her Parents are in it for all the politics, gossip, high blood pressure, sideline entertainment, and Snacks (Beer).

Sisters and Brothers are not in it b/c sister is, and they still get snacks.

Pet's are in it because they chase balls, naturally, and steal left over snacks.

It's the Beautiful Game, isn't that enough.
