OK hopefully we are not this bad
OK hopefully we are not this bad
An assistant youth football coach was flagged for more than an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Saturday in south Florida.
Referee Andrew Keigans decided to call the game between the West Park Saints and the West Miramar Patriots after he claimed someone made a derogatory comment from the West Park sidelines.
"West Park is losing to West Miramar, and then one of the assistant coaches yells, 'Oh, not only do we have to beat (expletive) Miramar, we gotta beat the (expletive) referees,' so I flagged him for unsportsmanlike conduct. He shouldn't be talking like that around the kids," Keigans told HLN affiliate WSVN.
Keigans started walking off the field while West Park coaches and parents protested his decision. That's when police say Saints assistant coach Dion Robinson ran up to Keigans and slapped him so hard that he fell down.
Anthony Ramos, a member of the West Park coaching staff, claims the coaches confronted Keigans after he pushed his way through some of the youth football players.
Keigans was not seriously injured. The entire incident was recorded and later posted on YouTube. Robinson was later taken into custody. He walked out of jail on Tuesday.
Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti said Robinson has a prior criminal record, which includes battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a firearm and cocaine possession.
The Miami-Dade Xtreme Youth Football League told WSVN that it’s up to each team to provide affidavits that they performed background checks on their coaches. League officials announced they have launched an investigation into Saturday’s game.

Youth sports in West Park have been temporarily suspended after a football coach was arrested for allegedly slapping a referee during a weekend game, the city's mayor Eric Jones, Jr. said on Tuesday.
City officials say they are conducting an internal investigation to determine how West Park Saints assistant coach Dion Robinson, 43, was allowed to work with children despite a lengthy criminal history.
Robinson, who was released from jail on Tuesday, is no longer allowed to coach, the mayor said.
Robinson, of West Park, has an extensive criminal record that includes aggravated assault, assault with a firearm and multiple arrests for cocaine distribution, Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti said.
"He was coaching the West Park Saints, but he was far from a saint," Lamberti said on Monday. "He has got an extensive record. It calls into question, 'Was a background check ever done on Mr. Robinson?' "
Lamberti added, "The bigger question is why was he allowed to have contact with kids?"
Robinson is accused of assaulting referee Andrew Keigans during Saturday's game against the Miramar Patriots at West Park's McTyre Park.
Keigans was attacked after he called a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct against the Saints. The referee said he had heard one of Saints' assistant coaches — a sheriff's report doesn't say which coach — make a derogatory comment from the sidelines.
Keigans threw the penalty flag. "Suddenly, the assistant coach, who apparently disagreed with the penalty being called, barged the field and confronted the referee, all along being held back by the head coach," a sheriff's report said.
Because the assistant coach left the sidelines and entered the playing field to confront the referee about the penalty, a head referee ended the game. The Patriots cheered the decision as they claimed the win. Keigans couldn't be reached for comment Monday despite a message left a listed number.
A coach for the Patriots who was recording the game also captured the assault, a report said. The video shows Keigans trying to leave the field amid the commotion when Robinson ran toward the referee and struck him on the face with his hand, the Sheriff's Office said.
Robinson vanished after the attack and wasn't home when deputies initially went to arrest him, the Sheriff's Office said.

1. My jaw dropped as I read this "... Robinson has a prior criminal record, which includes battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a firearm and cocaine possession." There is no way this guy passed a background check. I think both the league and the head coach should be held fully liable for allowing there to be an assistant coach without a completed background check. Somebody with a record like that probably shouldn't even have been in the stadium, much less working on the sidelines.
2. Dozens of people in this latest video looked idiotic. (Silly things like Thumbs-up and High-5s after an assault?) Only a couple people looked rational in that video. Videos posted on this site over the past 2 weeks has proven something very important to us parents and our kids... there are video cameras taping you ALL THE TIME. They are subtle but they are everywhere. Everybody (and their kid) needs to take their actions a lot more seriously if you don't want to end up as the next star of another bad uTube video.

They will have to move their team to the "SUPER IMPROVED, DIABOLICAL, RAGING Youth Football League."

I saw that yesterday too... pretty brutal hit, and worthy of a longtime suspension.... Could have been pretty bad if connected to her nose or temple.
not as bad as the sideline beat-down we saw a few months back in that high school game... but pretty scary if you think about it.

In a previous life I spent half my day running skip traces and I still dabble a bit here and there and you would be surprised at how little the majority of background checks actually bring up. Most companies, organizations subscribe to a background check service that offers different levels of service and most also subscribe to that service that costs them the least while minimizing liability against their own organization.
Most diligent parents with a basic understanding of the internet can find out more about an individual's background in 30 minutes than most of the background check services offered out there (and they charge you for what is usually free!)

The games aren't the problem here, now traversing the parking lot to get to your car - that's the danger in ntx.
