AMOUNT OF RUNNING IN A SOCCER GAME Empty AMOUNT OF RUNNING IN A SOCCER GAME

You know, even though the information below is about professional soccer players, it is still an eye-opening piece of information. I was worn out just reading about it!

Of great midfielders such as France's Zinedine Zidane, moving constantly to exert influence on the game, it is said their feet touch every blade of grass on the soccer pitch in the course of 90 minutes. These hundreds of steps add up ultimately to miles, leading sports scientists to try to quantify just how much soccer players run in a soccer game.

U.K.-based sports science researcher Thomas surveyed the international literature on running in soccer games, noting that scientists originally measured a player's stride length and counted strides over the course of a video recording.

Soccer players typically run five to eight miles in the course of a match and alter their direction or speed every 6 seconds, Reilly wrote. A study of an English Premiership striker broke down that distance by type of activity. In the course of running more than 10 miles, the player walked 4 1/2 miles, jogged 3 1/2 miles, strode one mile, moved backward or sideways one mile and sprinted about a 1/2 mile.

In general, Reilly and other sports scientists have found strikers, midfield players and the center back or sweeper sprint the most, while fullbacks cover the greatest distances. Midfielders jog steadily. Goalkeepers cover about 2 1/2 miles per game.

Sufficient glycogen stored in the thigh muscles by carbohydrate intake before the match seemed to protect players against fatigue, Reilly wrote in his survey. Swedish players surveyed spent 15 percent of the game running at full speed if they had low muscle glycogen and 24 percent of the time sprinting if they had high glycogen levels. Belgian college center backs and strikers covered an average of almost 500 yards more in the first half than in the second half as their glycogen became depleted, Reilly noted.

While soccer players cover long distances during the game, 60 percent of elite players' time is spent standing or walking, and another 18 percent to 20 percent jogging, according to studies by Reilly's Danish counterpart, Jens Bangsbo, a fitness professor. Hard runs and maximum effort sprints may involve only three to six minutes, with adequate rest time to avoid significant fatigue, concludes Joe Bonyai, a New York-based certified strength and conditioning coach.

very interesting. But goalkeepers covering 2.5 miles per game? They must be counting the walk from the car to the field...and back.

Keepers depending on the game do a lot of side to side and up and back movement different from what a field player does.  In a game where a keeper has a lot of shots it would make since to me that they could move that much. There can be some games where I would expect they would not cover that much.  Two high level teams likely wouldnt even have that many shots and most of the goalkeeper would be doing is some side to side and up and back movement when the opposing team did get the few opportunities presented to them.  What happens when doing things like coming out for breakaways or having to come out to clear (those are short sprints).  Keepers are also always moving forward and backward based on what team is doing.  Keepers need a whole different type of fitness then field players.  I played goalkeeper mostly but there was a few years in there when I played on the field it was after intense matches as a goalkeeper where I was the most exhausted physically and mentally.  Keepers should be in as good of shape if not better then field players. Almost any things they do is going to be short and explosive.

Thanks Keep. In general I think all players need to maintain fitness for different reasons. You are right that a keeper needs to be able to do explosive starts when needed.
