The TCU athletic department announced that it will add women’s sand volleyball for spring 2015.The decision came from the need to offer more women’s sports to remain compliant with Title IX regulations. TCU’s campus population is more than 60 percent female.“We knew we were going to have to add a female sport, and then volleyball is an emerging sport,” TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte said.

I think it is interesting that TCU is choosing to add sand volleyball since they can use the same coaching staff already in place and it "compliments" their existing indoor program. I read the article and chuckled at the AD's comments; of course he tried to make it sound like they picked sand volleyball because it is an "emergening sport" and give it a positive spin, when you know in the meetings what they were really saying was, "Okay, guys, we are going to be in trouble if we don't do something to get in compliance so what girls' sport can we add that will cost us the least amount of money to hire new coaches and build new facilities, and lets try to benefit another program we already have if we can! What do ya got?" (not saying it is a bad strategy, just not really the approach that was conveyed in the comments in the article). It also makes me wonder how many more athletes will be added to TCU's athletic program, or will this just allow them to give more money to the same number (or a slightly fewer more) of volleyball players, many of whom will now be playing "dual sports"?
Title IX - in theory it sounds good, but the implementation sometimes makes you go hmmm.
