DrSoccer wrote:You're looking at it wrong. First find good skills coaching. Put in 4-5 1 hour sessions each week either with him or not,  (before or after practice or on days off or weekends). Always have your dd warm up with foot skills at home for 30 minutes before leaving for each team practice or game. During the summer find somewhere (camp/coach) where she can practice 2 times a day for 8 weeks. Repeat till she's in HS. Along the way find the best team that your dd can start for and that the coach is not an a-h. As she improves move her to a better team. At U15 its ok if the coach is an a-h. At 16 commit to college. Then sit back and enjoy her jr and sr yr in hs.

What do you do with the other 2 weeks of summer?? And you didn't say anything about playing with 4 teams throughout the academy career. Also, why only 1-hour sessions with the skills coach?

Teams don't matter, academy doesn't matter - its just a place for your dd to hone her individual skills. Ideally there would be a pick up game on your street each day but this isn't that world. So you have to pay for someone to yell at your kid on Saturday just to get a game in. 1 hr is enough for skills, remember this has to last till she's 14, and besides - any more and people will think you are over the top.

My daughter's Gaffer - Richard Smith with Triumph FC should be in this conversation. He is an excellent developer and great with players of all ages!

Armanji wrote:It never ceases to amaze me how many people will take bits and pieces of a conversation and try to turn it into an argument.  It is usually those who feel that their coach or team has been slighted in some way and they have a chip on their shoulder.  Please note my original post did not call out any team, coach, or club.
My OP indicated that the top few teams of an age group rarely have to develop players.  (Please notice I used the word "rarely")  If you do not understand what that word means please look it up.
BWG was simply playing devil's advocate.  He did not forget my OP when he asked "How do you know if the coach has accomplished this via "developing" players vs. recruiting and roster churn?".
I am sure he actually read and comprehended that I mentioned "By tracking a coach and team's progress over one age group you will be able to get a decent idea of how that team has grown and developed but if you go back and find other teams with the same coach you will be able to find a pattern."
I gathered he was trying to indicate that research alone was not enough.  I agree with him 100% and I responded tongue in cheek with "If you do not make it out to a game and watch how the coach's team performs, and instead your believe everything you read on the internet then you deserve whichever coach you choose."
I believe Borussia is not dumb enough to join a team through online research and/or showing up to watch a game.  I personally feel he would allow his daughter to go to a practice before they made a decision.  I do not understand why he needed to prove that point for the entire forum to read however maybe he felt others were dumb enough to join a team without going to a practice.  Either way, Yes Borussia I agree before joining a team one should probably attend a practice.  I just didn’t think I had to announce that, because I sort of felt it was common knowledge.

Armanji, I like your style. Another slice and dice guy (or gal). I trust you must type a whole lot faster than me, cuz it kills me with the time it takes me when I have to do it. Maybe I can just recruit you to post my replies..lol

I am under the opinion that players make the coach... Just look around at any team (youth)... from 1 - ### ranking. The #1-10 teams have the tough agresssive attitude and intellectually develop players. As you go down the rankings the those strengths shrink.
finding a coach (and players) that can add to your player is base on your players attitude.

Granted, success breeds more success, but good coaches make their players better every year. If you want to know how good a coach is, go watch him train his team.

Sure, you can learn a lot about a coach (demeanor, game mgmt skills, player rotation, etc), watching a match, but that is like eating a piece of great cake. If you want to know why the cake is so good, you need to go into the kitchen before its baked. The match is just the result the practices' intensity.

Very simple at the '04 level: the practices should be heavy on skills development and the girls should be having blast. If they're not, the coach is clueless.

I can't agree with "having a blast" as a requirement for a good coach.  I think a good coach challeneges his players, sometimes outside of their comfort zone (ergo- not "having a blast") to improve.  Girls at this level need to want to learn and grow and should understand it's not all fun.  Ask my DD if she wants to go to practice for 2.5 hours when it is 34 degrees out- or 55 and raining.  But she gets it- that is what I love about it. She is learning to be successful it takes hard work. A good coach does not accept a half a$$ed effort either.

RE: good coaches are made by players...if you believe this you are on the wrong team- period.  If you think your coach isn't developing his/her players I feel bad for you.

I agree with Pack on this one...if your dd isn't enjoying soccer...not every practice, but the idea of workng at soccer, her career will be shortened as the competition level rises...An 04 needs to be enjoying it first...if not, she is playing soccer for YOU and not her.

If the coach isn't making it fun...again, not ALL fun all the time, but at least an enjoyable experience (ie screaming, running them to death, borderline abusive-NO MATTER HOW MUCH BETTER HER MAKES HER) then she will be playing volleyball or golf pretty soon, and you will be wondering why she quit when she had so much potential...

There are several solid coaches not mentioned in this thread. My daughter spent 1 year with JK. Does skills with him off and on. JK did a fabulous job of preparing my DD for select. He has my vote for one of the best developers in this area.

Pirate, my 1st instinct was not to respond, but I have respectfully disagree with you.

"Having a blast" does not exclude discipline or commitment, but having fun at 9-10 yrs old on the practice field is absolutely necessary (actually applies for the next 2-3 yrs). I don't expect you to believe this, but, with no disrespect, you are making a mistake you are going to regret later.  The fact that you're using phrases, "at this level", "2.5 hrs of practice", "should understand its not all fun", etc when referring to 9-10 yr old soccer says you don't get it and you're headed for guilt and heartbreak.

I'm not trying to antagonize you, and I'm not by any means an expert on parenting or soccer, but I am a little farther up the path of this soccer journey than you are. One last thing-- YOU need to be enjoying and having fun every single minute that you can at that age. It will get stressful soon enough.

Again, no disrespect intended, I wish you and your dd the best.

I see no scenario where I suffer "guilt" or "heartbreak" in relation to my DD and soccer.  I have zero expectations for her other than to try her best.  Even then I don't expect her to give 100% everyday.  She is 10!  I could care less if she plays in select or HS or college (chance of that happeneing I put at 5%).

For us, it is about life lessons, learning to work hard and be a part of something bigger than yourself.

If she decides tomorrow she is done with soccer we will move on to another endeavor.  She is involved in many activities and still plays other sports.

You seem to be projecting your feelings onto me.  Not a good idea.
