Obviously those parents who dream of their DD making the US National Team and playing professional women's soccer haven't done their research around compensation:

Competitive sports for both boys and girls should be about challenging oneself and having fun. The pay-off happens as our kids use the life lessons they learn playing soccer - perseverance, teamwork, dedication, overcoming adversity, etc.

Looks like those girls who make it to the highest levels of female soccer will still make less money then their counterparts who go into business, medicine, law, etc.

Whoa Nellie slow your roll. Women's soccer is on life support, why you think the players in that situation would command anywhere near men's soccer money is ridiculous...

I agree completely . . . yet I have seen parents going ballistic on their kids because of how they are playing in a game. It almost is as though some parents believe that women's soccer has some huge payday at some point . . . why else would they act that way?? Wink

It's not about the money. When did parents start killing kids dreams for their own version of reality? I know when I was a kid nobody dreamed that when I grow up I want to be a white collar middle manager trapped in a cubicle shuffling meaningless papers all day for the rest of my life. All so I can buy tons of stuff that I don't need so I can continue to do a pointless job. This might be were most of us end up in life but man when did we start to aspire for it fo our kids. It's a good thing previous generations didn't have this mentality or there would be no pro sports. None of the pro sports started out with the athletes making much money. Play it because you love it not because of the paycheck. Otherwise quit now, work on your math and be an engineer even if you hate it. It will have some of the highest starting salaries.

Kind of reminds me of the glory days of professional baseball. The salaries that some of these guys made didn't really amount to much, however they would have endorsement deals and (gasp) jobs outside of baseball (same goes for football) to make ends meet. I have no doubt most of US women on that list make quite a bit more than what their soccer salaries listed on that site.

I hope no parent dreams of riches through sports for their daughters because the money is just not there for women's sports. I always simply wanted my DD to have fun memories of playing sports. I can't remember any wins or losses from my youth but I can remember the trips to games with my friends. I certainly didn't make a killing off of my athletic abilities, doubt most DD's will either. However it's still a worthwhile endeavor.

Well I would go a little crazy if my daughter got bad grades in math too but that doesn't mean I think she is going to be a famous mathematician. It does mean I know what she can do and that she is not doing her best. I am not one that goes crazy on the sideline but you were really talking about their mentality for doing it and although I don't understand screaming, yelling, stomping around and embarrassing your child, team and family like that, I do understand where it is coming from. I don't believe most are yelling because they are watching their kids fame and fortune go down the tubes. I know for me it is because I expect that if you are going to do something you give 100% not only for yourself but also for your team. If I see less than that and my child isn't sick or hurt then I will be upset for her letting her team down and giving them less than what they deserve. This is a life lesson that will pay off if she is a doctor, lawyer, soccer player or housewife.
As for the money, it will become equal pay to the men when the sport brings in equal money. As it should be.

Just noticed that Hope Solo is not on the list. Not that I care but I would have figured she made more than $25K.

She is not making her money through the national team salary, but through endorsements and appearances. The dancing with the stars is usually 150K + 50K per episode. The Gatorade endorsement is worth 100K annually, Her book income etc.. She has a net worth of 2.5 M. So while the salary isn't there, it certainly does provide a platform to become famous and popular. The savvy players will turn that popularity and notoriety in to earnings.

Sport illustrated body paint was phenomenal.

in all the years my kid has played soccer, I don't think I've ever run across any kid or family who thought there was a future after college in soccer, as a means to make a living.

And after 10 years, that's a lot of families and kids.

My DD loves team sports and I put her into what she likes best which happens to be soccer. If it was my choice I would have her in tennis, golf or some other sport that she has a chance to make a career out of it.

I never understand why parents want there kids to do soccer. Lots of injuries and lots of crazy parents.

The thing that I want my DD to become is a great leader and team player. That's what she needs to get from this sport. The skills she learns are just tools to be on the team. She can take the leadership with her in the future and apply it to her job, family and social life.

I would never allow her on a team with a bunch of individuals that are ranked high! If your on a team like that its like putting your $$ up in flames. Even worse you are hurting your DD!

Here is a great article that will bring us all to reality. If you are a parent that forces your DD in a direction. This will put your opinion in perspective!
