Bye, Bye, Bye

Why does a bye revert to the club if a team does not meet the requirements to retain the bye. Such as the teams moves to a different club and doesn't have all the players, or if a team disbands? I've read a few post about the clubs scrambling to find a team to fill the bye. This seems to happen with varying degrees of success. Sometimes the club can find a competitive team, but that is not always the case and the team is shown to be out of their element. I've been wondering why teams don't play for this open spot. I not saying that teams be allowed to compete for a D1 spot, but could the next highest D2 and D3 teams be promoted. Thus providing another D3 spot open in qualifying. It seems that would be the most competitive format to me. If I'm missing something please point it out.

You are missing the fact that the clubs will do anything to maintain their revenue streams   

Why? Because LHGCL bowed to the big clubs that wanted the rule changed. When LHGCL was one of the premier leagues in the nation, the byes did not belong to the clubs.

Just out of curiosity when did that rule change happen? I will admit that I do see it simplistically.   The team qualified not the club.  If that team is no longer able to retain the bye it seems that the most competitive environment would be created by having other teams competing for that spot.  An infusion of new talent would be refreshing.
