I always love the 'game should have been 'a million to nuthin' except for the other team having a player (or players) who stopped us from scoring explanation.  Reality is that if Sting was creating and capitalizing on great shots, they should have scored 8 -0.  I guess all the teams that did win 8 - 0 tonight played against teams with weak defenses/goalkeepers . . .  Boyles was obviously seeded incorrectly as Lake Highland officials would have seeded them in the Top 5 if they knew about the goalkeeper.

Reality is it is a surprising score, especially given that Boyles' keeper gave up 2 goals again FC Premier Opoku, which is the same team that only put up 3 goals on Purplicious last weekend (per GotSoccer).  No knock on the Boyles Goalkeeper, as I am sure she is good.  Just surprising a team seeded as high as Sting Donovan would even make a comment/excuse like 'the game should have been' after only scoring one goal.  Some things are better not drawing attention to...

Good luck to Boyles and Donavan for the rest of the tournament - this game gave one team more confidence and is causing another one to wonder . . .

Sting-Donovon had 90+% ball possession and they took a tremendoues anounts of shots on FCD.  Trust me, Sting tried to find the net....ALOT

Just like in the world cup, do you think the score on the USA game should have been higher if Tim Howard wouldn't have made those 16 saves?

So it sounds like you watched the entire game but didn't have a DD playing in the game - any insights as to why you were there?  Very confusing to me why a Dad would be at an entire game of two teams his DD doesn't play on without having a connection to one of the two teams.  My guess is you are connected to Donovan somehow (family friend, grandpa, etc).  If you have no connection to either team, care to elaborate on why you watched the entire game?

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I am sure Boyles Goalkeeper is great (but probably not at the level of Tim Howard just yet). At the same time, she did give up 2 goals to FC Premier Opoku, who were only able to muster 3 goals against Purplicious

In the end and per your reasoning, I imagine Sting Donovan will destroy the other two teams in their bracket (given they controlled the ball 90% of the time and the only reason they didn't score 8 goals is that Tim Howard's DD was the goalkeeper on the other team).  I will be curious how this goalkeeper plays against FD Dallas Red and SRFC - probably shutouts, right?

I did not once mention that they will not do well in the next few games.  I am only talking about that 1 (and I mean just that 1) game.

How about just appreciating the fact the GK and the Boyles team had a pretty good game and for one night and one game beat the almighty soccer blog predictions. We all know Sting will advance, as they should. Since you seem so bent on bringing up FC Premier scoring two on "her" (as if she plays alone back there) did you see the very next day "she" gave up 0 goals in the championship game to the same FC Premier team to win the championship of that tourny? Everything is relative, the point is even lowly non-factor teams in the eyes of the FBR standings can make a game of it from time to time. Probably should just appreciate a good story and not another 8-0 blowout.

No desire to bicker . . . no controversy.  Your original post stated the following:

What bothers me about posts like this is that it is either posted by 1) a Sting Donovan parent making an excuse as to why they didn't beat a team by more (i.e. should have been 8-0 Sting or more), or 2) a FCD parent who is discounting the play of everyone on the FCD team but the Goalkeeper (i.e. if it weren't for FCD's Keeper).  

In my experience watching and playing multiple sports at a high level, it almost always takes an entire team, viewed as the underdog, playing at their best to beat or keep the game close when playing against a significantly higher seed (e.g. most of the other similarly seeded games last night were blowouts).  While one or two players can make a significant difference, it almost always takes a team to play to a 1-0 loss when the game, at least by seeding and on paper, should have been significantly different.  I wonder if the rest of the Boyles players parents agree with your assessment that the game should have been 8-0 or more if not for the FCD keeper.  

Of course, another option to consider would be that Sting played poorly - but your post that the FCD keeper made 20+ saves seems to discount that.

In the end, I am sure Boyles keeper is great and your comment accurate.  It will be interesting to see how Boyles and Donovan play the rest of this weekend.  After Sunday, we will see how accurate your post about the FCD keeper is.

BTW - I see your DD is a keeper as well based on past posts.  Since I can't verify, I will take you at your word that your DD is not the Boyles goalie.

I completely agree with you on this - from an outsider's perspective who has no vested interest in the success of either team, I would assume that FCD Boyles, as a team, played better than expected. This could mean that they were underseeded or that they rose to the occasion against a much stronger team, at least on paper (e.g. David and Goliath). Not sure, as I wasn't there - I will say that I was surprised to see how close the score was.

I would be curious over the past few years what the biggest game upset was during the first week of qualifying. Does anyone know if a Top 10 team has been beaten by a team seeded in the 40s during week 1 of qualifying. Is a 1-0 game like this relatively common every year or more unexpected than in the past?

I wouldn't put all my stock in the argument that FCDE keeper can't be any good if she gave up two goals to FCP Opoku. Remember that this was a tournament where Opoku was short on players and borrowed a girl from the FCP Ngon team who is the best offensive weapon I've seen in the 04's and I've seen RASE, TX Spirit, LFS black, Texans play. She's big, fast, quick, strong, good skills and a killer  strike. However, as was stated above, she didn't score in the championship game of that tournament. Point here is that looking at indirect scores for teams in clubs that share players doesn't give a very accurate picture.

PP-Dad:  Just FYI,  lots of parents appreciate soccer and do watch other games besides their own child's game.  Various reasons:  Scouting,  learning more about certain coaches, future recruitment,  can't get enough of the game,  actually enjoy watching other teams play when there is no emotional connection,  meet soccer mom's (for the single dads), working on a wind tan, Bracketology Religion meetings,  I'm sure there are more reasons.

Wow what the hell is going on over there. I thought King Tut was just a one off but maybe there is more too it. I thought LFS was maybe 2nd best team in the age group but this does not look good
