State Cup Brackets

Anybody else scratching their head over the brackets. Looks like they used some sort of hybrid snake, seeding, manipulated, we like it better this way, decision making.

Please explain if you understand the logic.

What I've explained to my child every year is that if you go out and win every game you will be the State Cup Champion.

Seeds 1-4 are straight GotSoccer rankings

Seeds 5-8 are straight LH D1 current rankings

Seeds 9-13 are "we like it better this way" rankings.

I personally feel that teams should be ranked based on alphabetical order.

That is a good point, but it doesn't do much for getting commentary started on the State Cup. Really just explains the obvious. I am interested in more than the obvious.

How about something like:

Who do you think is going to win 02 State Cup and why?

I think the team that wins the final game will be the winner.

Darn it OLJW you just took all the fun out of it!

Naaaaaaaaahh. I didn't explain WHY. That keeps the suspense factor still fully active.

Seeding is based upon standings at the end of the Fall portion of the LH season.

Facts are good. However, I have a question? Could someone explain the reasoning behind seeding a Tournament played in May, based on results that ended in October? Why ignore results from November, December, January, February, March and April?

To me, that means decisions are being made based on old data and they've ignored half a years worth of results, the most recent half a year. Why use old data when more recent data is readily available? Who supports my argument? All NCAA sports, the Olympics, all Pro Sports.

How many LH games have been played in Feb, March, & April? Haven't all but like 2 per team been rained out? And I'm thinking this weekends aren't likely either! Ugh!!

I don't question the seeding. I question how the seeding was applied. Usually it should look like this. Start at 1 and go down to 4, snake back up to 8 then snake back down to 12, then 13 gets put in Bracket D.

Bracket A
1-8-9

Bracket B
2-7-10

Bracket C
3-6-11

Bracket D
5-6-12-13

What they did was this:

Bracket A
1-8-13

Bracket B
2-7-12

Bracket C
3-6-11

Bracket D
4-5-9-10

See what they did was use the traditional snake method with seeds 1 thru 8, then they manipulated it and decided to put 4 of the top 10 seed in Bracket D and only 2 in A,B and C. Like someone said earlier, just go win, but it is a head scratcher and doesnt follow common logic when setting up a tournament.

The method used puts the top seed and the bottom seed in the same bracket. The bottom half is shifted due to the uneven number of teams. If 16 teams entered then seed 1(top) and seed 16(bottom) would be in the same bracket. Only 13 teams entered, so seed 1 and seed 13 go in the same bracket. Then you apply the serpentine formula.
