Another big mistake that parents make is forgetting that the contract is with the Club not the Coach.  It's a business deal.

I think it's interesting Koolkat hasn't jumped back in once after starting the fire.

Coaching a PPL D1 team, decides a week before to let those who he is committed to know.   He leaves space for the "better" players, but tells numerous girls that they are on the bubble - too many to actually make the team, but more than enough just in case his "committed" players bail.  Then, to "test their loyalty", he holds numerous "tryouts" over the next week, and  tells them if they want the "chance" to play for his team, they need to show up for every practice - effectively precluding them from looking at another team.

On signing day, the loyal kids show up - not knowing where they will play.  Of course, the coach knew they never had a chance unless there was a mass exodus.  And there, in front of their friends, they are "politely" told that not only is the coach not interested in them, but the "back-up team and coach" that they promised those players for the last 6 weeks would be available, "all of the sudden" didn't make.  If they want to play for the club, they will have to go play for this other coach further down - or go find an opening elsewhere.

Karma

jib - looks like you feel for the ole "I need to see her just one more time" dialog.  my $.02 - don't sign, become a free agent and pick another club altogether - a lot of teams will be looking to fill roster.  too much adversity with this situation.

Beware of the "Team ABC looking for 1 - 2 players" posts.  If you cannot walk onto that team and start but still offered a contract, they may be attempting to max out revenue with paying bench sitters. Many (most?) clubs require maxing out the roster before handing scholarships to non-paying starters.

Don't let it be you.  Makes for a frustrating and long year of captivity.

Hi flip, I have been watching my dd play since she was 4. I have missed four games she has played in during that time. I take her to practice and watch her. We talk about how she felt - what she thinks she did well and what she didn't do well. I started reading up about soccer after her first game (when she declared she loved it.) I don't expect everyone to spend that much time, but to know the game and how your dd plays, you need to spend some time with her. You also need to understand the game.

I don't coach her, I am there to cheer her on and support her. I know when she doesn't play her best and she does too. So I don't need to tell her -she knows what she needs to do. I know her strengths and weaknesses and I provide her with extra training when she asks for it.

Did I know much about soccer before she started playing? Nope! It wasn't played when I was in school.

Am I still learning the game? Yeppers.

So parents out there, what do you know about your DD and soccer?

1) She kicks, I pay
2) The best strategy is to put all the slow, fat kids in the back and tell them to kick it as hard, and far as they can up to my precious little Mia playing forward.

Sorry...  next time I'll use metabolically challenged...

p.s.  I thought because I am severely metabolically challenged myself, it was okay for me to use the "F" word?

Ina, I see you there and was not even close to referring to parents like you or the other ones who are involved with reality... I am referring to the ones who see their kids running three steps behind the others, don't attempt to use their opposite foot, and you can tell they never touch a ball outside of practice or game day . The ones that can't see that their child is not at the same level as the girls they are working with but tell them after training that they are so good and did so well and then get pissed off when the coach doesn't take them or puts them on a lower level team. The attitude usually transfers from them to their DD and it is the coaches fault for holding on to them??? Some need to join reality and let them train with girls at their level or just above and work work work their way up... Don't try to go from Plano D2 to LH D1 and get mad at the coach when they don't take her

Hi flip I agree with you. You have to be realistic about their abilities good and not so good. I have seen the parents you speak of. And it isn't just about abilities, it is also about the player's passion and commitment. Actually, I think the passion and commitment are the most important. And I'm not talking parent. ;-) I know you are a committed parent too so we are like family. :-)
