Re: 2016 Surf Cup Champs - Sting Black '06AP
I have had the privilege of attending Surf Cup tourney three times with my DDs(Pulps Liverpool 00', Sting Black 05/06, and Sting Black 06). The tournament is run first class and the soccer level is truly elite. Making it out of bracket play is extremely difficult and an honor. Historically, NTX has not fared well. It is truly an honor for this team and coach to join the short list of NTX teams before them that have paved the way by winning Surf Cup(Sting 97, Texans 99, Kicks Selecao 06(they still are talking about Kicks),...i apologize if missed any.
I truly believe NTX will start be thought of like So Cal and Northeast (PDA) in the future, b/c parents are ensuring their kids are being developed technically and tactically. I don't have an opinion on AP b/c I think the cream rises regardless, but I am HUGE fan of small sided which will also help. The 06 and younger ages in NTX will benefit technically and tactically from playing 9v9 thru U12.
No offense, but NTX had it wrong in the past by putting U11 on 11v11 fields, whereas other areas like So Cal & NE kept kids on smaller fields until U13.
Net the playing field is leveling for NTX. Here is to future NTX Surf Cup winners!!!

IMO this is the toughest tourney in the country and SB brought it home to NTX. RESPECT to Coach Audrey and parents for their planning and preparation. But most of all congrats to the players who showed close to flawless execution in only allowing 1 goal in seven games, AMAZING. Enjoy you more than deserve your accomplishment!

There were 9 teams from NTX that went to Surf Cup last weekend. 1 team won the whole thing (Congrats Sting Black 06!), 1 team lost in the Semi Finals (Congrats Solar Chelsea 03) and 1 team lost in the Quarter Finals (Congrats SRSA 07). The other 6 teams could not get out of their brackets.SkeetsG06 wrote: I truly believe NTX will start be thought of like So Cal and Northeast (PDA) in the future, b/c parents are ensuring their kids are being developed technically and tactically. I love your optimism Skeets but those results do not say anything about NTX development. I would some it up as a pretty poor showing for NTX. Only 3 of 9 teams made it out of their brackets!!! As much as I love it for those 3 that advanced and especially for Sting Black 06 for winning, that was not a good weekend for NTX soccer.

I agree "It is a pretty poor showing for NTX."
Does this tell us that NTX has to put all its best players into one team in order to compete in national? Sad fact but maybe true.
Congrats to Sting Black 06, Solar 03 and SRSA 07, keep up the great work.

I agree that I might be too optimistic. Blame it on hangover from post game celebration!
However, I was thinking more about 06' and younger. I believe 4 NTX teams (SB 06', SR 06, solar black 06, SR 07). Net of the 4 teams, 1 Champion, 1 quarter finalist, and 2 did not make it of bracket. Overall, the younger age did well.
I reference that age group bc they benefit most from the USSF changes to smaller fields. For example, The 06s will stay 9v9 until U13. I predict this will result in significant improvement in their tactical and technical development, which, hopefully, will translate to more competitive results on the national scene. The 07 and younger will benefit the most b/c small side will be their primary form of development from the beginning...pretty cool.

I heard the new 7v7 standards were a joke. 47x30 fields. Kids scoring from anywhere on the field. Walls were necessary on every kickoff. Throwins were into the back post for a nod-in. At least 1 keeper punt goal per game. I hear it wasn't soccer at all.
Perhaps the buildout line and no punting will help, but it's still a bit too small of a field for 14 good U10s. 60x40 would be much better.

My dd played there over the weekend, noticed that those socal teams played better than Solar Black and Red both technically and tactically. Lucky enough Sting Black represented NTX very well.
It would be very interesting to see how Solar is going to change in order to compete with Sting locally and socal teams next year.
I am talking about 06 only.

I don't expect Solar to make any drastic changes until ECNL/DA or the coaches hand the team off.

Not to hijack an 06 thread but: The standards weren't fully implemented. The play out line was on the field, SD Surf let them punt anyway. We didn't have a punt go in, in our games, but I saw 3 from other games. Kickoffs, need to be indirect, as one team brought up the big legged defender to go for the goal coming out of half. Fortunately for us, it hit the crossbar and went over. Yes throw ins were set pieces. Some complained about a lot of throw ins, but honestly, that is due to lack of skill with whole age group. Hard kicks will go out a lot on small field, using skill and touch passing it wont as much. Headers were also allowed, which I was fine with.
I agree the size needs to be 40x60, still small enough to put players in some tight places when handling or passing, but a bit bigger to avoid the rec 'herd' that I saw in about every game from time to time and let athletes be athletes. My thinking, fwiw, is 40x60 would make for good, yet still technical soccer.

Unfortunately I didn't get to see a whole lot. Between skills, bball and old teammates, I am very familiar with Sting Black and their prowess. I had live txt updates, but that is about as close as I got. Great job SB!! I did see most of the 2nd half of SD Surf and Solar Black. My DD has some old 07 friends on Black she hadn't seen in a while. Surf was very good, fast to the ball, excellent ball movement and team speed, Black put up a valiant fight, but the younger girls on Black just need some time.

Surf, Albion, Strikers, Legends. Solid clubs in the 06 division in Cali. Next year we will have even more Texas teams come out of pool play.
