Post by Anarchy 14/10/16, 01:06 am

Is there a standard per diem or do clubs set the rates? Don't most coaches get a free room when the team books together? Heard of a team paying almost $1k over the tournament fee to cover per diem and he has more than one team going. I haven't ever been asked to pay that much extra from what I remember and this was just Oklahoma. Are some teams now paying for the coach's time for tournaments?

reasonable food, plus travel and hotel expenses $30 per player for 200-300 mile road trip and one night hotel. more for flying and multiple night hotel expenses

It's ridiculous, but question it and you are a "difficult parent".

That's exactly what she's worried about. It seems like somebody is getting a nice chunk of cash out of it though.

Looks like some coach is charging each team the entire cost of trip. If you kid is a keeper deduct $1.57 for each save your kid makes on this trip from your next payment. If your kid is a forward, then well you are screwed. Very Happy

Do the other parents have the same feeling as you do? Then maybe talk to the coach as a group..then you're only the instigator :-)

It's not my team or money lol. She asked me and I figured I would check here. She could ask other parents their thoughts, but she didn't want to be the cause for a stir over nothing if it's the norm. Most parents just pay and don't ever question anything, but it would be nice to have some sort of breakdown.

Done a few out of town tournaments - never had a coach get a free room (from the hotel due to multiple bookings).

That being said, I have known of a manager who divided the costs by fewer than the number of players going "in case someone didn't pay their share".  Best answer there - ask the manager for an exact accounting of all costs paid by the team.  If the coach has multiple teams, ask why your team is covering 100% of the per diem (or ask someone on another of his teams what they are paying).

You might be surprised - the problem may not be the coach. Shocked

A good team manager gives an exact accounting of travel fees.

We've done half a million out of town tournaments with various kids and clubs and the coach always has travel, room and a reasonable per diem for meals.

We need to come to your club if the coaches pay their own way Smile

My kid was on a team where there were many non-payers and it was expected that we cover their transportation, housing and food, and their share of the coach's expenses.

The per diem should be reasonable expenses spread across everyone going, multiple teams if applicable, no exceptions.

At Triumph parents pay only for Hotel room. Coaches pay for flights or gas. Why would anybody pay for food? Coaches have to eat if they were at home so what's different if they are away?
We budget for travel per team (the ones that are going to travel) and the cost is part of the dues that way no one is asking for extra
I have seen coaches live it up while away all at the parents expense. We've had 2 here that are no longer at Triumph. We don't like to be associated with those type

She's paying about $30 over but with three teams that's around $1200. I've paid for coaches expenses and just never did the math. I really just assumed each club had a standard or guideline to follow.

i guess now i need to know how is team traveling? air car? how many nights at hotel? how much is nightly rate? $1200 may not cover coaches expenses to Disnry etc. $1200 would be excessive for a two night stay in Houston

We are taking a trip out of state in June. The coach is driving and multiple teams will be going. Every player going on every team will pay their equal portion of hotel room, gas and meals. The hotel room is booked in advance and gas and meals are a perdiem. $30 per day seems fair. The price per player will not be much. If you are on a club, that does not pay equal portion....leave! Those people are deplorable!!

Alot of tournaments do have free hotel rooms for each 10-15 rooms you book. It is a very common practice. this helps a ton with coaches expenses, but it does vary by tournament and by hotel.

One caveat is you have to be booking through the list of approved travel hotels from the tournament (which is usually required)

nothing is free. you are correct though! if you book 10-15 rooms at the same hotel (usually for $20 per night increase or "full retail") they throw in an extra room for coach

When you travel you are supposed to use the list of hotels from the tournament... we have always done that as that is what is expected and usually the easiest way to get the whole team at the same hotel. We usually find a pretty good rate from the list, but i am sure you could go get it cheaper looking on your own, but again getting 15 rooms at that better rate is sometimes a problem. We usually also only pay coach for actual cost of meals, not per diem... also either mileage (IRS rate) or airfare + rental car.

We also split cost if more then one team going...
