Main thing I found over the years is the coaching style really makes very little difference in the development of the player.  The kid and his genetics will determine where he winds up.  Some of the best kids that I have ever seen play, played for direct long ball coaches and likewise some played for pass first, pass often coaches.  The kid and the kid only will determine how much he develops.  Put him around high level players that challenge him and don't worry so much about the coach.  (surely many will disagree but this is my own experience after a combined 20 years or so in NTX youth soccer)

But coming through all of this the kids have the most fun when they are on a winning team, period.  Playing tons of passes can be very boring if the team does not win and stay at the top of the rankings and play in big tournaments and events.

Good luck to these little guys.  Lots of years of fun ahead.

Interesting point of view, thank you.

Very interesting pointers. But unless I’m misunderstanding you perspective, I couldn’t disagree more.
Every single soccer entity talks about the need of more quality coaches and you don’t think they are necessary… The europeans must not know a damn thing about soccer.

“The kid and his genetics will determine where he winds up” -
The kid’s mental make up, yes. Genetics??? No, no, no, no, no. If the kid has the ability to play, his genetics does not matter. But we are in America, size matters!

“Put him around high level players that challenge him and don’t worry so much about the Coach” -
If there was any truth to this statement, the DA would be producing more players than any country in the world. We need quality Coaches buddy.

“Kids have the most fun when they are on a winning team, period.” - This is what’s wrong with soccer in our country….

“Playing tons of passes can be very boring if the team does not win” -
True, and this is the biggest difference Pedro’s style and any other “possession team.” Most possession teams just pass the ball. If you watch Pedro’s teams play they don’t just pass you to sleep, they try to embarrass you with their skills too, including their goalies. And what stands out them most is seeing forcing them to dribble even if when they lose the ball. And they win a lot.

“AND STAY AT THE TOP OF THE RANKINGS, and play in big tournaments and events.” -
Buddy did you ever play the game??

When I read his post it reminded me why we first introduced out kids to organized soccer which was for pure fun. But now that we’ve all taken this further than just for fun your counter points are right on.

Once asked one of the most respected coaches in NTX what he first looks for when taking a new player at age 8 or so to see if he has a future.  The answer was, "I look at his parents."   Harsh but true.  A kid with no genetic gifts will NEVER be a top level player no matter how many times he practices a step-over, short passing drills etc.  You can be small, but you better be quick and have strength and balance.  You have to have a combination of things athletically or Pep Guardiola himself could not make you a great player.

Also talked to the head coach of one of the top College programs in the County, winning multiple college titles and coaching many future pros who on this subject said, " I have one of the most skilled, talented kids I have ever had in all my years coaching on the roster but I can't put him on the field because he is not athletic enough."  There is a minimum amount of genetic talent it takes at the top level.  Can't get around that.

Actually the DA is producing more pro players in the US than ever before.  Check out the flood of recent kids going to Europe at 18 and earlier as well as all the young, Under 17, kids signing with MLS clubs as HG players.  99% of them are from the DA.  Just the true stats.

If you think losing if fun for an 8-12 year old, have fun. Staying in the top of D1 or playing showcases, traveilng with the team and winning is trophies is fun.  Can't believe anyone would challenge that.

Good luck with your team.  Never heard of Pedro or his team. If his players turn out to be the top players in the area, they will more than likely move on FCD Da, Solar Da and DT Da to get the exposure and opportunities that come with playing on elite teams.

None of Pedro’s players are good enough for FCD DA
