DA/ECNL tryouts
DA/ECNL tryouts
Prompted by a post on the boys side, are the DA/ECNL tryouts in May really the path to make these teams or do people start contacting coaches earlier to be assessed?
With the understanding that many of these players will return from prior year, are coaches truly open to a full re-assessment of the teams and new talent coming in? OR unless your daughter really stands out, the coaches at tryouts already know who they are going to select - and these tryouts are just cattle calls to fill in other new/lower levels teams?

Just like anything else in life, unless there is a "problem" with an incumbent, you will need to demonstrate that you are noticeably better than the incumbent to unseat them.
Bottom line, if your kid can play and is a clear upgrade over players on the current roster, he/she will get a spot. If your kid is just "in the mix" with the other kids battling for spots 12-20 on the roster, the coach is more likely to go with a known commodity, than an unknown.
Human nature and common sense.

I follow your logic. Makes sense. Question is: are people calling coaches now about getting in front of them, or wait until the cattle call?

I don't see any downside to calling a coach and inquiring, but I would go in with the expectation that they will likely just tell you to come to the tryouts once they are posted. Worst case, you are getting your kid's name on that coach's radar as being interested.
Note that if your kid is currently on an ECNL roster, there is a gentlemen's agreement in place between the NTX ECNL clubs that they will not hold a tryout for a kid currently on another ECNL roster until after May 1st. If your kid isn't on an ECNL roster, ECNL tryouts will usually start around early April.

Coaches are usually pretty familiar with the top players in their age group. But yes, parents are always jockeying for position this time of year.
