District Picks

This is really a question for the High School coaches...

Does a player have to be nominated by their high school coach in order to be voted on for 1st Team, 2nd Team or Honorable Mention, or can you vote on whomever you want as long as they are on the roster? Just curious.

Back in my coaching time, all the coaches in the district would meet up. Each coach would nominate the players they thought deserve All-District. Then each coach would make their argument over each player. In the end, the coaches vote for the players they think should make it based on the nominations. There can be quite a bit of arguing and fighting over this. If you are in good graces with your coach, he/she may insist upon your kid being deserving of such an award,but if they aren't so impressed with your kid, their attitude, the parent's attitude, etc., then they may not put up much of a fight in favor of your kid.

But that was back then. I can't speak for exactly how they do it now.

Additional comment added later: And coaches tend not to leave people off just because of petty differences. They look better themselves the more players they have on these awards lists.

Coaches nominate players from thier team. Other coaches in the district vote to place them on 1st , 2nd or honorable mention all-district team. TAPPS has it where you nominate your forwards, then your middies, then your back, and keepers. Top four are 1st team all district, nominies who recieved votes 2nd team, then nominies that did not recieve votes honorable mention.

There is no dout that a coach player relationship can keep a player off a all-distict selection!
