Turf put the drink & the smoke down. I can't belive you said "thats not how the rest of the world plays" I can tell you never played the sport, you were probably a tennis player or something! Have you even ever youtubed the word "fustal"? WRONG!!! Thats exactly how the rest of the world plays guy. The US is just too old fashioned and dislexic to realize its own short comings, so it might take time for them to see the difference in how Brazil, Spain, Argentina, etc develope their players. The proof is in the pudding man! You watched the Brazil vs US wmns world cup gm, skill is the true beauty of this sport and the essence is in possession. US womans just had more heart. Enough said. Bk to the point, you look at the greatest players known to time, where they are from, and what they have accomplished. Lets take for example Marta 5, time FIFA womans player of the yr. An ICON in wmns soccer by right! She is the woman's version of Pele, Zidane, Ronaldhino, Ronaldo, C. Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Raul, etc but you're the type of person who would put her under Mia Ham because she won more world cups. Now seriously put the smoke and the drink down son!!!!!! Before you tell us how Donovan is better than Kaka.

This attitude is so typical, and probably why most Americans are not soccer fans. BY DEFINITION, THE GREATEST PLAYERS EVER ARE THE ONES WHO HAVE THE MOST WINS. It's true in every other sport on the planet, why is it not in soccer? The main idea behind the game is to win -- just like every other sport. You soccer nazis routinely point out the importance of skill training at young ages before worrying about "winning," but you never seem to agree at what age does the concept of victory start to take precedent. Here we are talking about national teams in World Cup play, and you still want to imply that style carries more weight than results.

At the end of the day, at the end of an athletic career, the only stat that matters is the number of championships. Winners might not always be the most skillful players... it doesn't really matter. They just win baby... time after time, they find a way to do it. It's what separates champions from everyone else.

We can all agree Marta is an awesome player, and she still has many years ahead of her. But until she's holding a couple of world championships, she will not stand on a higher pedestal than Mia.

And regarding your comments on possession -- while possession is a key component of the game and is integral to the success on the pitch, the truly beautiful part -- the part where the crowd comes to its feet and roars its approval -- is the spectacular high-speed breakaway runs or the direct play combinations that result in high-octane goals. PACE AND SCORING ARE EXCITING, NOT DELAY AND "KEEP AWAY." If we want juggling, we'll go the the effing circus.jocolor

From Washington Post article titled Brazil's Marta Is a 10
Midfielder Living Up to Pele's Legendary Number "She started playing soccer at the age of 7, and perfected her skills in the indoor game known in Brazil as "fut-sal" -- salon soccer." And if you research this she credits Futsal with her development on the big field.

Put that in your futsal and smoke it.

Marta vs Mia - Marta is the most skillful women's player to ever play the game. No one else is really even close. But lawnboy is right she can't go down as the greatest over Mia when her only championship was 1 season in WPS. Just like Dirk had no legit claim for top 10 all time until he got his...championships matter. Same reason people need to put the pipe down claiming Messi is the greatest ever when he's won nothing outside of club soccer. He's not even the greatest player to come out of Argentina.

Futsal vs Outdoor - I think the kids need both. People assume that because a kid plays physical outdoor they must lack the skill to play any other way. In some cases it might be true, but some kids just give the coaches what they're looking for and play whatever style fits the situation. My DD loves futsal more than outdoor and but hasn't gotten to play it for over a year. Things she picked up pretty quick playing futsal take a lot longer to embed or reinforce in full-sided games on huge fields. Looking at the skills progression of the girls I've seen that kept doing futsal the last year, it's pretty clear more futsal is better at younger ages, especially if you can get a league where all involved understand the purpose of the game and use it as a fun training tool instead of yet another win at all costs competition.

Pena - I'm intrigued on the development approach you're taking with your DD by going with skill training instead of joining the club teams 2 years out from select. I hope you talk more about it as I'm sure others would benefit from hearing your story.

I'll keep y'all posted. I just feel that a tech solid kid will better contribute to a team as a whole. I'm not develpoing a ball hog or a one man show here because great players create great opportunities for the other teammates on the team. My 03 is not gonna be a big kid by any means so she is gonna have to make up for it by playing big. I don't want this to come across wrong but I know select time is coming up in a couple years but I'm not worried about her making a team she ll be more than ready to compete against the best.

True your DD will do well, but not practicing against the best will not help her in the long run!

Is this guy serious? Coming from a cricket player.. Oops I meant baseball player. First off you couldn't even comprehend a one pg article about the point in futsal developing skill, plus you have numerous testimonials from all these parent. Someone had to point out a statement Marta made about crediting futsal to how she plays the game, which you completelyt missed, so honestly dude, put the crack pipe dwn now!! As far as longevity, as competitive as I know you are, witnessing you frm the sidelines, I'm sure you are looking for your DD to get a scholarship of some sort.... Just thinking out loud. So it boils dwn to this in the long run. It takes 3-6 months to teach a team possession soccer which is what club coaches are bread to do. Some are good enough to accomplish that feet and some work at it, but if you truly break dwn any team, you will see that, ie Barca, Real M, Juve, Inter, Man U, Chelsea, etc as individuals everyone is brilliant technically which is why they are so hard to beat. In the long hall Turf the college coaches dont look for just a big, strong, fast player, they look to see if a player can beat anyone 1v1, ball control in the air and if they are skillfull enough to create opportunities for their teammates, not robotic toys. So spare us with this "in the long run talk" Plus if we break dwn your SRSA team, there's only one kid who is techinically great, so ask yourself this Turd, I'm turf what are you doing to help your dd to be as good as the best player on your dd's tm? Because we all know that it takes months to learn possession soccer, but it takes years to develope skill! But you wouldn't know that because you played Lacrosse. As far as the Marta Vs Mia thing, lets settle it this way. Youtube Mia ham highlights and Marta highlights and ask your DD who she likes best. As for the guy who mentioned the true beauty of the game, I completely agree but the greatest player known to have ever touched the ball is PELE and you honestly think all his goals were off of possession plays. You sound just like a fan so go get your pom poms ready for your nxt dd's gm and hike up your skirt. The rest of you have a great day.

cheers

working with a skills coach should not be just when they are young. My DD will continue working with her skills coach until her career has ended.

I didn't mean to get your panties all up in a wad. Why go there? You are speaking of one player Marta. True she has a great game, but when she gets down she brings the whole team down. Yes the SRSA team has a great player but also has alot of players above average.
