Has there ever been a US born player play at this high of a level? What Clint is doing is pretty nice. I do think when it is all said and done he will go down as the greatest player in American history!

Yes -- and he was an NTX youth player. Imagine that. How in the hell did this happen? Laughing

Because he is really from East Texas and his younger years were spent playing against his brothers in the backyard without "professional" coaching, and he is the only true creative player on the national team

Yeah, I'm sure that's it. Because Lord knows, no other kid in NTX ever plays ball with their older siblings in the backyard.

Clint Dempsey's story is inspiring I saw an interview with him and he almost didn't get to play select soccer anymore. But the tragic loss of his sister gave their parents the means to drive back & forth to Dallas so he could play. She was a rising tennis star and they could only afford for one kid to continue. That is why he always looks & points up when he scores because every goal is dedicated to her. Couldn't find the interview to post it but just thought I would share. Can't imagine the guilt and drive that would give someone. He is a great player that plays with lots of attitude and the skill to back it up. Just my opinion.

Dempsey was born in Nacogdoches, Texas and, for much of his childhood, his family lived in a trailer park, where he and his siblings grew up playing soccer with the local children or anyone they could find. His older brother Ryan was offered a tryout for the Dallas Texans, an elite youth soccer club, and brought Clint, who was noticed and recruited while passing time juggling a ball on the sidelines.[2] Dempsey became a standout on the team at an early age, but had to quit due to his family's time and money constraints as his eldest sister Jennifer was becoming a ranked youth tennis player.[3] Several parents of his teammates with the Texans offered to assist the Dempseys with expenses and travel, allowing him to rejoin the club.

This is a good case of parents getting involved. I would like to thank the parents that stepped up and made it happen.Sounds like the parents are the ones that are deserving of his development as a youth. Really he could not get any help from his youth club!

"Don't Tread" song, with autobiographical hints on Deuce. I believe he played in the trailer park with Mexican American neighbors. And the tribute to his sister at the end is a bit that Deuce insisted be added to the video.

Man, you really are a troll. Do you not think he was scholarshipped by the club? The other parents helped pay for travel and expenses. For the club to pay those other expenses would set a bad precedent. Now, the boy's academy program makes it easier for boys like Dempsey to be able to afford club soccer.

Instead of spending the next hour trying to figure it out on my own, I'll just ask.

How did Clint Dempsey's select teams perform? Were they national champs? Multiple times? If so, was he the reason they won the national championships? Or was it a truly great team? Were there any other elite American athletes on that same squad? Was he the obvious star?

The best thing Dempsey did for his career, was to go to the Premier League and play at the highest level. Albeit, Fulham is a perennial mid to bottom level team, he gets plenty of shot opportunities, and converts many of them. To answer a question that another posted earlier in the thread, Brian McBride, was also a player that was well regarded, and ironically enough, also played for Fulham. He is considered in high regard by Fulham faithful..
