Street Soccer Empty Street Soccer

Post by Guest 14/03/12, 08:10 am

So I'm off all week, sitting here watching my dd playing FIFA Street and it brings a question to mind... Why don't we have any street courts? Would anyone use them if we did? Would one of our fine suburban cities build a few if the citizens asked?

How quickly would we start ranking the teams? Haha

I know here in Allen we have a rapidly growing outdoors extreme park, skate park/water skiing..etc... Why couldn't we add a few street soccer courts?

don't even have to make them. The cities should just convert some of the many unused public tennis courts into Futsal

Isnt that part of the "problem"? - that we rely on an official infrastructure, such as leagues, associations, etc., or soccer wont get played. Same as waiting on the city to give us a street court.

By definition, isnt "street soccer" just a bunch of kids getting together with a ball, and making do with what they can for goals and a field? Watch "Pelada" (its streaming on Netflix) for variations of street soccer around the world. (By the way, my DDs were inspired by it, especially the Iranian women for whom playing soccer is illegal).

I bet if enough kids used cul-de-sacs or open spaces in city parks to play, and neighbors start to complain about all the kids playing in the streets, the city will follow. But it shouldnt be that the ones who want to play street ball wait for official infrastructure to be built. Especially since cities are going bankrupt all around the country. Just give the kids a ball and tell them to play.

I get what you say and somewhat agree, but me and the DD can't just cruise the suburban streets looking for a culdesac to play in with any real shot at someone else showing up to play, that just isn't realistic in this day and age.

Now say a bunch of converted tennis courts where you could head to and others would know they could head to... "If you build it, they will come". There isn't anyone organizing the skaters into a league at our skate park, the city built it so they use it. I drove by it yesterday and there were no less than 200 kids out there, easily.

The courts are already there and many unused. Tennis requires equipment and training. The beauty of soccer is that even though it is difficult to master, anyone can play. The cost of conversion is minimal and could probably be done with donations.

Yep, I get what you are saying too.

To my amusement and happiness, do you know what my DD and her soccer teammates do in those unused tennis courts? Soccer tennis! Before they practice, since, you know, we get there 10 minutes early, a few girls play soccer tennis on their own initiative - it's a juggling game that develops their touch and heading abilities.

Try it out with your DD. It could be more appealing to her than for coach to say "juggle for 5 minutes".

And just for the record, if my city proposes to build street soccer courts, I will back it up with a vote and a voice.

We have two courts within walking distance of our house that we've kicked around on and I rarely see people using them for tennis.

This is already done in Garland, more so with older teen age kids. Issue with this is if you only have 2 individuals that want to play tennis they have the court and it has been backed by the cops here in Garland, teenagers have been warned not to use the courts for anything other than tennis. While practicing with my boys team i seen 30 or so individuals ran off tennis courts where 2 people showed up to play tennis and called the cops. Bad thing is the tennis players played for 45 minutes at the most where as the soccer players would have had 2 games going on on either side of the courts. And would have lasted way longer than 45 minutes as they sually play 4v4 or 5v5 on these courts. Winner stays on till they get beat and go back into the rotation. I know there are a few courts in the Dallas areas as well that run calle soccer.
Here is a link. Again this is for older kids and adults but i am sure it could be done with younger kids.

Let me know i have some boys and girls that would benefit from the extra touches!

I can't believe people tried to play tennis on tennis courts. Garland sounds like some kind of hell hole!

I know how dare they try and play tennis on a tennis court. Post was to inform people that tennis will take priority and that street soccer already exists in the metroplex just have to know where to go and what time.
As far as garland yeah not so bad over here and if this is hell then hell is not so bad.

What catagory is Pelada in? I haven't seen it listed. World Football Daily was punting it with the makers last year

I found Pelada through search. It was awesome. Now watching "In the hands of the Gods" about some English guys doing freestyle soccer across the Americas in order to pay for their trek to see Maradona in Argentina. Ironically, I realized I saw the dudes at half time of a FC Dallas game a few years ago.
