Good article. Just attend any youth tourney here and you'll witness no shortage of coaching puppeteers trying to script every touch, every move, thoroughly convinced their way is the right way.

This was the killer, "Wynalda’s players were gassed after 30 minutes, and the Timbers outshot them 37-8." The goalie for Cal looked good but it sounds like one of those games when there's just a lid on the goal.

My favorite part of the article was this quote from Wynalda. “The one thing this country never does is they never play the game they’re in. They’re so worried about playing according to a blueprint. We’ve sucked the creativity out of players by telling them this is the way the game’s going to be played, and you have to do that. We find talent and we start coaching them, and that’s when we start ruining them.” Great quote.

Looks like speed and athleticism win the day vs. "creativity." What an ass-kicking.

But the Cinderellas had a great run at it and good for them. I always enjoy a good underdog story.

Yeah... Seattle extracted a little vengence on Portland's behalf I think.

A lot was made out of the 3rd round game when Portland was eliminated by Cal. That appeared to be a tight game where Portlad just couldn't finish. I wonder if the same attention will be paid to the 4th round game where the New York Red Bulls (1) got eliminated by the Harrisburg City Islanders (3).
