Does anyone have a suggestion or recommendation on what brand of sports sunglasses to get for a 8 year old?  We'd like to keep the price reasonable as the DD has a habit of rough play with her belongings.  Looking for some that she can use for practice, so light with a strap would be preferred.

From personally dealing with glasses and sport goggles for my DD for the last several years.  We went with contacts.

The goggles obstruct the peripheral view and had her constantly searching for the ball.  On top of the constant fogging.  I even researched bought and tried nearly every anti-fog out there, even the diver stuff.  Constant battle.

I've seen glasses on a u07 Boy set in frames that you could literally twist and torque.  The frames were extremely flexible and the lens didn't fall out.  They weren’t the coolest looking frames in my opinion but they did exactly what the parents had hoped.  I think they were from a toy manufacturer.  They were maybe by Fisher Price but it could have been another toy manufacturer.

It costs extra but make sure you get scratch resistant.  I believe that resistance coating is guaranteed for 2 years.

Rec Specs - get them at Target Optical with the $25 replacement option. If anything happens within a year, they replace the frame for free and it includes normal wear & tear.

Walmart has a lot of choices that are fairly inexpensive and look nice.  You can also get the lenses that darken when outside so they can be used inside or out.  At that age it's possible that her prescription may change frequently too.  If she likes the frames you can always have them just update the lenses.

Hadn't even thought of that since I don't wear glasses. You bring up some good points.

She's got problems with the brightness, which was the catalyst to looking at sunglasses. I wonder eye black like the football players do? Although, given the fashion statement, that may not work either.

My daughter tried contacts when she was younger and was not ready for them.  Got $80 sunglass prescription goggles at walmart a few years ago.  They lasted.  Daughter is now in contacts and loving them.

My daughter started wearing prescription rec specs from walmart for bball and soccer in U8 and still wears them now.  Her latest pair have transition lenses which she said are pretty good at handling bright light and changing light conditions.

But, I did make the mistake of showing her some clips of Edgar Davis, and now she wants a pair of Oakleys Sad

Having personally dealt with glasses and contacts since I was in the 2nd grade, I think you should possibly check into contacts.

I didn't start wearing contacts till I was in Middle School (7th gradeish age), but it may be worth it to check into them now.

Brightness can be a factor, especially for people with blue eyes. They do make special contact lenses that are supposed to cut down on the brightness, but I would think they would cost a pretty penny.

When it comes to eye correction and protection, I (personally) would spare no expense. Having taken some Human developmental classes and getting my BS in Biology, your eyes are very delicate, and will not stop changing until around the age of 25. You'd like to protect those eyes to prevent as much damage as possible until that age and beyond as you only get two! Be careful buying anything cheap products, as those "sunglasses" generally only obstruct the light intensity and not the UV rays emitted by the sun. This means that your eyes are wide open under the sun glasses allowing every bit of those UV rays into your eyes. Make sure whatever you buy protects from UV rays.

Currently I wear contacts. I find glasses and rec specs to be to much of a hassle... granted I'm a lot older than your daughter Smile. I wear sunglasses at all times except for when playing and coaching during practices, and I have no problems.

My advice, don't go to cheap, and make sure to consult with the doctor to make sure they will protect her eyes. You'll also need them to be prescription. If you don't have a prescription for them, then they wont be allowed in games technically.

We are soccer fans and will be putting in a full line of sport goggles you can get through the on-line website XabeOptics.com Check it out. Currently doing a lot of different kinds through special orders but can and do get everything at a fraction of the price as we are an optical laboratory selling retail.

Thanks for looking!
