Labor Day Tourney Heat Empty Labor Day Tourney Heat

Post by Voided 27/08/13, 12:43 pm

The forecast for Saturday is for a max temp of 108, I'm from out of town, what do tourneys in DFW do differently, if anything, in the heat of the day?

They will add a water break during both halves usually.

Recommend you bring/setup a canopy for the girls on the bench (for mid-late day games)...and you can't overstress proper hydration.

It should be noted that the clock does not stop on waterbreaks. During the summer tournaments the first half always seemed end on time. They seemed to add 2 minuets to the second half to account for the waterbreak. The waterbreaks happened in every tournament we were in, but they were always brief. Drink some water, dump some water on your head, get back out on field.

We've had this discussion a few times and here are the highlights.

WATER - days before, make sure the parents are making their DD's drink throughout the day.
Frog towels help with the cool down while on the sidelines.
If you have Gatorade squeeze water bottles, have a couple parents keep them and if the opportunity presents itself, squirt a quick sip of water in the players mouth.
I would disagree with Pale Rider. DO NOT drench your head with water. It fools the body into thinking it's cool and sweat glands shrink making you sweat less which can quickly lead to overheating.
My DD has found sweat bands to help when they can be dipped in cool water.

My bad, it was not my intention to be instructing on what to do on a waterbreak. The point I was trying to make, for the out of towers, is that the waterbreaks are brief and the clock doesn't stop. The extent of my medical advice is, rub some dirt on it and walk it off.

All of my medical advice comes from Monty Python. I hurt my head...no you didn't.

First consider your "forecasting source." Weather in NTX changes so often, I wouldn't put much stock in the 108. Also I hadn't heard of 108 for this weekend. NBC's website shows Friday high 102, Sat 101, Sun 99 and Mon 98, respectively. Not that those are not high, but 108 is crazy high. And then I'd check again Friday as the weather forecast will likely change by then.

Second, the tournament organizers usually allow for a water break mid-half.

And third, hydrate 24-48 hours before any match.

Hope that helps, and I wouldn't sweat it. cheers

OK, the weather forecast calls for 100+ temperatures through Saturday. I agree with others, start your DD hydrating now and make sure she stays that way all week and into the weekend.

Remember those forecasted temperatures are based on the temperature in the shade.  If the forecast is for 100 degrees (in the shade for the parents under a canopy) then it could easily be 108 degrees in the sun (for the players on the field).  HYDRATE!

Labor Day Tourney Heat Empty Scorcher

Post by MaggieMaggie 28/08/13, 12:24 pm

Bring an icechest filled with wash cloths and ice.    You can get a bale of white cloths at places like Anna's Linens.     Have an extra plastic bag for used wash cloths so they don't throw them back into the ice chest with the clean cloths and ice.   Little pick me up they can rub on faces and necks.

Consider quartering and freezing some oranges.   They can suck on them during the half to help replenish.

Pick up a mister from someplace  Lowes/Home Depot.   Just remember not to use it for lawn products and then water for the team  Smile

Labor Day Tourney Heat Empty Re: Labor Day Tourney Heat

Post by PlayersDad 28/08/13, 01:29 pm

Wile hydration is important, helping the girls cool their core body temperature is critical. Dumping water on someone's head, or using a mister (best option) are physician-recommended ways to help the girls keep their core body temperature down. Water on the skin allows for evaporation which cools the skin, which then cools the body. Excess water on the skin does not change sweat glands or pores, and often applying external water is the only way to cool someone down. So if your DD is really hot, it is better to spray her with a mister or dump water on her head rather than having her drink water.
