New soccer mom here….. Empty New soccer mom here…..

Post by Toyota4Life 26/10/14, 08:20 pm

I am fairly new to this whole academy soccer thing so please go easy on me. My daughter plays on an 06 academy team and they are having so much fun and really improving every season. I thought that was the point of academy was to develop talent. I am all for a healthy dose of competition, but we have had parents of the other team tell us that they brought 4 players from higher divisions to come play to try and beat us. It happened 3 games in a row during regular season play. During the last two games we have had a torn ACL and broken wrist from players shoving our girls down from behind and no fouls called. Am I just naive or is this normal 8-9 year old soccer? Why bring all the guest players and sit your core team on the bench? Why not develop them into the team you want? Is this something we just get used to?

Sadly, something you should get use to in NTX. The refs don't make calls and the over the top parents are beyond controlling.

Sorry to hear about an ACL at U9 and broken wrists.

New mom, unfortunately if your team has success get used to it.

I understand the insecure coaches that do it regularly. What I'll never understand is the parents who allow their kids to play down a level (or 2 or 3). What's the point?

I totally agree. The players gets nothing from going down two levels to play us. I felt bad for the bench full of kids that did not get playing time that day.

Do you have a two-part concern (dirty play and guess play) or are you saying that the guess play is dangerous? Sorry to hear about the injuries!

I think the only way to avoid this is to play the big tournaments, like NTFC and Plano. With so many top teams playing in these tourneys, there shouldn't be as many available guess players.

This isn't true. A player gets better every time they touch the ball. Maybe they play goalkeeper/CB for there team and playing down allows them to play forward, or maybe not--who cares. You said it yourself, you are there to develop and so are those KIDS. Allow your kid to play as much as they can, wherever they can, whenever they can. My advice for a new parent is to worry about your own daughters development solely.
If you are worried about your TEAMS status, then you will have a long road. That team will change 100% between now and when it actually matters.

It is a two part concern even though the ACL tear was from a guest player who we had played against on 3 different teams and she took out multiple players in each game, unfortunately this last one was a season ending injury.

We played in Plano Labor day and we are playing in the NTFC and we love tournaments, they have always been a much better experience.

I totally disagree. Coaches don't bring guest players so that they can play a position that they would like to get better at. At least not in our experience. They bring them to win, which I totally understand.I just didn't realize that so many teams would pick from higher divisions. I don't care about my teams status I care about them as individual 8 year old kids who are here to develop and get better. My point is all those kids on the other teams bench cannot get better when they do not get playing time because of multiple guest players coming in to win a game. And we have had the exact same group of girls since they were in first grade so I am just trying to understand how all of this works.

How it works is very simple.

It is a free for all. Its driven by parents that want to win at all costs so the coaches must cater to that or risk losing their players (paying customers) instead of focusing on developing them.

Its as simple as that.

Easiest way to make sense of it, and understand why some things are the way they are, is to remember this is a business for the clubs and most coaches. They are always going to do what is in their best business interest.

I agree, I guess this is why we are just an independent team and not part of a big club.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here. But if teams are having to bring in players from 2 divisions higher just to compete with your team, then maybe your team is in the wrong division and should be playing higher.
Sorry to hear about the injuries. An ACL at 9 is almost unheard of. But that says more about the refs not calling fouls, than guest players.

frankly its ridiculous for an academy coach to bring in guest players to "win " the game. this is only done to benefit the coach. An academy coach is there to teach skills..PERIOD. This is the sad side of kids sports adults who think winning is everything even at 8 years old...

I know we have seen so many tweaks that could be made to CPP to make if fair but I really think that if we had 1 or 2 of these they could get it right 1) if you have 14 player no CPP should be used. That is 3 subs which is not great but doable and or 2) can only pull from teams in lower levels or age groups 3) smaller clubs can band together if they want to use it too. But it is not being used for development and any one who say it is is not being truthful.

We switched leagues this season so we signed up for the division we thought we were even with. At the Plano Labor Day tournament we realized we could hang with some of the higher teams so we are changing divisions next season.

We have been shocked at the injuries this season. Both happened in back to back games. Both girls were taken out from behind right outside the box. It never occurred to any of us that we would have an ACL tear and a broken wrist.

...and here is where all of the CPP naysayers are getting it wrong, and hurting their case for getting the rule modified.

I know for a fact that statement in BOLD is incorrect, as I have direct first hand knowledge where CPP has been used for development, both in a playing "up" and a playing "down" scenario.  To not acknowledge that this is the case, is to come across as ignorant and/or irrational.

Now, on the contrary, there are also plenty of cases where CPP is clearly being used for competitive advantage.  Sometimes, it's solely for competitive advantage, sometimes it serves the convenient dual purpose of development AND competitive advantage.

Railing against CPP as "all bad" isn't going to help your case in trying to get the rule changed (that is unless you think our current US Congress is operating in a highly effective and efficient manner).  If you want to affect change, you need to acknowledge that there are merits to both sides of the argument.  Then you have a framework where you can make some progress to modify the implementation of CPP in order to try and maximize the use of CPP for development, while minimizing the abuse of CPP for competitive advantage.

Oh so your concern was for the SRSA player's development? I just assumed this was a joke. I know I got a laugh out of it.
And actually, you have convinced me that CPP needs to be revoked. But not for the reasons that you have layed out.... just so we don't have to hear you complain about it anymore.
