In a surprising reversal of their previously published Player Development Initiatives, US Soccer announced today that they are abandoning their planned conversion to birth year based aged groups that was previously mandated to occur in 2017, but was being planned for wide adoption in the fall of 2016.
In a press release from U.S. Soccer, President Sunil K. Gulati stated that “While we still feel strongly about the need to align US Soccer with the rest of the world, we have received significant negative feedback from the general public, numerous competitive and recreational soccer associations, and College Coaches and the NCAA, regarding the impact this change will have on the structure of youth soccer in the U.S.. Our goal is to continue to grow the sport of soccer in the U.S., and it is apparent that moving forward with the current proposal would be counterproductive to this goal. We sincerely apologize for any undue confusion or stress this has placed upon our member organizations and the general public.”

Good to see the author of the cited article, Abe Rillphul, has branched into youth soccer. I am used to Abe's stories about a Disney theme park in Texas.

Who wouldn't want to spend June/July/August at a theme park in hot, humid Houston?
