Not sure where to put this, so i'll stick it here since I suppose it's relevant to the recent trend in early offers. University of Texas has recently made a habit of making early offers to 8th graders, but UNC just offered a 12 year old '05 a full ride:

The girl is amazing. Was tearing it up in the boys DA her own age and is now playing up 2 years on one of the top '03 teams in the country. Still, how does a 12 year old know what she wants to study? Is Dorrance even going to be there in 5 years?

Is this trend a good thing?

It’s hard to say if this trend is good or not, there are definitely arguments for both sides. Are the athletes too young? We don’t know if they have peaked already, what if they get hurt, etc... however if the player has shown their value, the college(s) see that value and know the type of player they are looking for, it could be a great thing. Think about how many parents are/will spend thousands on ID camps and travel, hoping to catch the eyes of coaches. For these early commits there is no need to travel the country trying to impress, they can focus on school and individual prep. I’m sure there are factors that can cause chaos with this early decision like if a coach leaves the program. However most of not all of these players are talented enough that most any coach/program in the country would want them.
