Coronavirus Thread Empty Coronavirus Thread

Post by timmyh 12/03/20, 12:50 am

Seems almost certain that this is gonna have an impact on soccer for the near future.  Figure I'd start a thread to discuss.

Upcoming "major" tournaments in California and Las Vegas and Virginia have already canceled. The foreign travel ban announced tonight almost certainly means the upcoming Dallas Cup and DIGC are going to be missing many of the teams that are currently committed.  It seems unlikely those tournaments go on as scheduled.

I would think transmission risk is low for a regular local league game, but it isn't hard to see the possibility of leagues that are currently in full swing (high school, DA, Lake Highlands, etc.) taking the path of "an abundance of caution" and suspending or canceling games.

There doesn't yet seem to be an appropriate balance between overreaction and logic with this whole thing, and I certainly don't have any suggestions for where to draw that line when soccer is obviously a minor thing when placed against the backdrop of what appears to be a serious health threat.

Anybody want to speculate on what the next few weeks and months of soccer are going to look like?

A real issue. Many of the things being cancelled are where many people are in a confined space; basketball for example. Playing with no, or a limited, crowd is a possibility. And with soccer people are spread out on fields and can avoid too much interaction. Travel will be the biggest issue with out of town tournaments that depend on air travel. And you, of course, have spotted the problem with Dallas Cup.

This is probably only the beginning of what will be canceled or delayed. My daughter was supposed to play in VA this weekend. We are sitting in the ATL airport where we were connecting waiting for our return flight now that the tournament was canceled. Crying or Very sad The more time goes on, I’m sure the sooner things will be canceled in advance of the event. Hopefully anyways.

Sounds like DIGC canceling, too. Rumored that the DA will be suspending all games.

High likelihood we may be all done with soccer for the spring.

if big money makers like the NCAA are willing to lose that much money, for sure everything else will be cancelled. bigger than sports.

The past 24 hours of everything canceling has pretty much put an end to this thread for a while.

I guess there is nothing to do for a few weeks but speculate on whether the Solar girls should have 1 DA team in each age group next year or 2 ECNL teams (and whether or not FC Dallas may do the same, effective killing the Frontier GDA Conference).

Blue Sky is open, staff is "diligently" scrubbing all surfaces to ensure everyone remains corona free.

Anyone want to meet up for pickup games?

At this point, I assume we aren't getting kids together to play soccer until June, at the earliest.
Tryout season is probably a bust? Putting together teams for the fall is going to be quite difficult, especially for ages starting U11 and U13 play (10s and 08s) where rosters expand and there is usually a lot of movement.

Of course we will. I assume your point is that it’s irrelevant in the big picture of what is happening in the world right now, and you’re 100% right.
But this place is a distraction from that, and it’s ok to talk about such things. Perhaps even helpful.
