You make the call.
You make the call.
Yellow team is losing 3-2.
Less than 30 seconds left in game.
Yellow player gets tripped just outside the 18.
Ball gets set, Red players get moved back 10.
Just as Yellow is about to kick the ball, the ref blows the whistle and ends the game.
WTF?
I have been soccering for a very long time and have never seen that happen before.
The ref seemed to enjoy making the call judging by the smile he had on his face at the end of the game. "You should have kicked it faster" he said.
REALLY? Sorry price of #@&*!!
I am glad I didn't have a dog in that fight. I was just watching a friends dd play.
And of course this part has nothing to do with it: The other coach is a board member and ref.
Curiously, the ref let the 1st half run almost a minute long, but the 2nd half ends right at 30? Was it because the Red team was losing at the end of the first half and had an advantage?

I have never seen a game end on a corner kick, goal kick, free kick or throw in. Very strange.

It does not happen often, but I have seen both Pro and World Cup games end this way. It sucks, but the Laws of the Game give the center the power to decide when the game is over. Even stoppage time is always given by the 4th official as "a mininmum of x minutes". If the 4th official says a minimum of 2 minutes the center can let it go 4 or 5 if he/she feels that is appropriate.

The stoppage time I get; whether it is stopped short or goes long. However, I don't understand blowing the whistle to end a game during a dead ball.

Time is entirely at the center's discretion, however, if he took the time to move the defenders back he certainly should have allowed the kick.

You never saw the World Cup game where Holland scored from a corner but the ref had already blown up. Its a matter of opinion with some folks. The refs words were "when the time is up, the time is up" Some refs like for the play to end dead. Really though if its time, its time. In HS the buzzer goes so really there is nothing to say other than its the end of the game whatever happens. The only way time can be allowed is if the was a penalty kick, thats has to be allowed to be taken, a free kick like this does not
Re: You make the call.
For those that have never seen it I found this one as well
Re: You make the call.
However, for good game management, it is wise to take a bit of a wait and see attitude.
Something to consider: if it is unfair to blow the whistle before corner kick or free kicks (excluding PK) it is equally unfair to the defending team to extend time for those.
However, I agree that a play should take it's course, unless the kicking team does indeed take excessive time to get set up, which did not appear to have happened here.
Another note-the 4th offical displays added time, but the referee decides on how much and communciates it to the 4th official, eitehr by holding up fingers, or if they have headsets, by verbal communication.
Games can indeed finish on corner kicks, though I have been told by coaches that it is in the laws of the game that it cannot. I told them if the can show that to me in writing, I would turn myself in and request a replay for mis-applicatiobn of the LOTG. Never happend.
Interestingly enough, on Friday at Lightning Cup, I blew the whistle for half time and one of the coaches said that I had killed a break-away. The facts: Ball was on attacking teams own half of the field, there were 3 defenders between the attacker and the ball and the goal line, with nobody going wide for a pass. I did look first and made my decision based on tournament instructions of "running clock with no stoppages" and common sense.
