I saw far too many girls (high school age) wearing knee braces this spring. As your daughters age they become more susceptible to knee injuries. Coaches will tell you that boys and girls are the same but the real facts indicate that girls are 4-8 times more likely to tear knee ligaments, than boys.
I have two Academy age daughters and this concerns me. Parents it is up to you to address this issue with the coaches as your daughters move up the competitive soccer ladder. There are ways to prevent injuries through training. Please read the article and talk with your coaches about structuring practice to include more agility and leg strengthening training.
I know that girls this age are at a low risk for injuries, I believe that training the girls properly now will prevent many acl injuries when they get older. Once a week I take my daughters to the track to do a hamstring and core workout. My advice is if the coach doesn't have the time to do it, then take your daughter to the track once a week and do it yourself.
