05 Fall 2013 CFBAL Registered Teams

I find it interesting the philosophies different teams have. Playing the absolute stoutest of competition regardless of outcome vs. taking things slow and being a better team in a lesser league, then those in between. Aztecs maybe, but personally don't get teams like Scarfone or Celtic from last year playing top competition and not exactly dominating. What approach is best? ...for the players.

Great question! I really think it depends on what you're ready for.

One could assume taking it slow gives players a chance to develop their skills and an understanding of the game without being under constant pressure while playing the stronger teams enables (or forces) them to play at a much quicker pace against players farther along in their development. If a player, or team, is able to play good soccer (able to make good decisions under pressure and have the skill to execute) at a faster pace, I think it's desirable and should accelerate development. If they're not able to do so, it's discouraging at the least and could actually stunt development.

In neither scenario, though, is it desirable or developmental to force children to play in numbers and on fields meant for teenagers or even adults.

Honestly, what's the rush?

The most recent 04 CFBAL Team Update posting no longer lists Sting 05 Scarfone.  I hope that Banana Kick's suggestions hit home.  Of course it could be a mistake but, for what it's worth, I think BK is dead on.

Reina is playing TGPL, hope we have some good teams join. It would be nice to get to play closer to home, but we will have to see who registers with us.

I haven't heard of any other 05 teams considering playing TGPL, have you seen any lists? deadline to register was July 26th. With the move to meadowmere, not sure why anyone would commit to playing TGPL especially considering the addition cost of $300+ and the less then stellar fields... But maybe I am missing something...

Depends. A lot.

Playing the best competition is good as long as you're not getting your butts beaten every week by a large margin and you actually get some constructive offensive opportunities rather than playing a full game of damage limitation. Nothing is gained from that other than a huge moral loss, a tendency to play panic ball and zapping the fun out of it for the kids because of your preferred "development" model. Equally, winning 10+ to zero each week is counter productive because kids start falling into lazy and bad habits because there's no consequence.

The top 5 or 6 teams benefit from playing each other because there's no SRSA 03 or RASE 04 equivalent in the age group that massacre everybody I'd say the teams 7-20 can change given the addition or subtraction of two good kids. At 8/9 years old, the league choice should only ever be about what best benefits the team/kids, not the trolls on an Internet forum who are desperate for more accurate rankings of kids still in elementary who list Patrick the Starfish as an inspiration.

It's a toss up between less than stella fields or less than stella refs. At the 04 level, TGPL provided mostly competent officials. CFBAL last season for some 05 games had kids who didn't understand the basic laws of the game, let alone their application. At every level, World Cup included, officials will make errors but there's a difference between a bad judgement call and plain out not knowing the rules. If you don't know what constitutes offside or what infringements are direct/indirect, know what the advantage rule is there for, etc. the results become a lottery and who got screwed over the least rather than the kids affecting the result with their efforts and abilities.

Having said that, the depth of competition in CFBAL probably outweighs those annoyances so like many teams, we'll probably aim for where our peers are at.

I think it is tough call on the refs as last fall in CFBAL we had mostly knowledgable refs and any concerns we had Nicole always addressed with the refs assignor and followed up with us with feedback and findings etc.

As far as TGPL, our experience last fall in 04s was not perfect in regards to refs. We had several situations we had to address with Chance and generally he did the best he could.  It seems the state of refs in North Texas at the academy level is a mixed bag no matter what league you play in.  So like wolf said, I think there are many factors each coach has to consider when determining their league choice including League Administrator, Scheduler, Refs, fields and competition.  There are probably other factors as well...

Yeah, you're probably right. Any league can have a mixed bag any given week/game/assignment where officials are concerned. Nicole is pretty good at addressing issues whether there's always a palatable resolution or not but I think the customer service in that area across the board for all the leagues has improved greatly from 4-5 years ago. With the increased competition, the leagues realized they needed the teams/club support.

Impressed with the overall closeness of most of the top 20 in the 05 age group. Not as painfully predictable currently as other age groups at this stage.

The cost was pretty equal to CFBAL once you add the local association registration fees compared to US Club cards. And it would have saved a ton on gas and tolls, but oh well it was too good to be true...lol We couldn't get an updated team list this week from TGPL so we are headed to CFBAL with the majority
