06s Playing With 05s in Select Fall 2016

I've been hearing some say that the 06 borns (U11) who are qualifying this summer for competitive league in the fall can play up on an 05 born (U12) team that will be qualifying for competitive too. Is that correct?

Yes, unless LH comes up with a new rule against it.

2. Younger players are allowed to play in an older age division with the consent of
their coach and parents. However, NTSSA rules state that any player who has not
attained the proper age to play Under 11 select soccer may not play up on a
competitive (select) team. Players must be 10 years old or older on July 31 to
participate in competitive soccer the following soccer year.


Obviously they will need to change the dates but you are allowed to play up as long as you are of the proper age to play select.

From what I have heard from many parents. Now that there kids are the oldest in the 06's. It's like playing rec. again for some players.

I am good with my DD being an August 05. This is giving her a big challenge. Some parents /players want to just win. My finish line is many years down the road.

If your DD can handle it. Play up if they are 1%er. Stupid to just stay in Rec.

The younger '06s are pretty much rec players.
The older '06s are only good because of the age advantage.
The young '05s were great and still are great players, but they are burdened with having to compete with giants that have started puberty.
The older '05s are big, strong and fast, but don't play a good brand of soccer.

Hope you don't mind me busting your balls, Juice Box. I know many parents share your sentiments.

I do not mind a little ball busting. Its all good in the soccer hood!

I saw a couple older 05's that were bigger, faster, skilled and stronger that play for DTS 05AP. There were several girls on that DTS team that can flat out play. And plenty of SKILL and real good soccer. Will only make our DD's better playing that team!

Looks like puberty is going to be the wild card for my DD's age group the next couple of years!

Just to play devil's advocate....yes, the talent pool in the 06 world has decreased with the exiting of the 05's.  Certainly, if you are an 06 ap kiddo, you are now the top dog and maybe less of a challenge each week, BUT if your coach has you playing against boys, or two top leagues you are still facing challenging competition.  

Before our top 06 parents decided if they wanted to push up or play 06 ap we watched an 05 LH game - 11 v 11 on a big field.  Two things helped our parents decide to stay 06.  1) on a giant 11 v 11 field your kid touches the ball a whole lot less.  2) While possession soccer is still the end game for well coached 05 teams, as a 9-year-old playing 11-year-old size matters and the kick-n-run game is happening for those kids trying to play on a giant field - even if the coach teaches possession, the kids struggle to make that adjustment the first year.  

Ultimately, we believe in what the USSF says..small-sided soccer is better for younger kids.  We can push up later if they are good enough, but at least for the next two years (as it stands now) they will touch the ball exponentially more in the 9 v 9 game.

Good point kj2149 and a popular comment from mant parents. The only problem I have with your small sided comment is. My DD plays plenty of small sided in 5V5, 3V3 and of course one of the best small sided is basketball. If you look at the U.S. Womens team. Quite a few live in cold environments and they cannot play soccer year around where they grow up. That is one thing that helps those kids over Texas in my opinion. Specializing to young is not my cup of tea. For sure another conversation. I will attach 1 among many articles that support my opinion.

I still want my DD practicing with stronger, skilled players. I am sure 1 game a week of 11V11 will not kill her soccer career. Practice is where the learning is most important. JMHO

IMHO, I completely agree with your assessment (and Abby Wambach's) that cross-training is one element that leads to successful women athletes, which is another reason we chose to stay ap 06. Our entire team plays basketball together (on two different teams) two seasons a year (same seasons). We break the team up, there goes the schedule.

I know that some girls at this age are playing basketball, volleyball, etc. for cross-training. But I've never quite understood that thinking at this age. My DD plays only soccer and trains footskills exclusively and has done so for the last 3 years. We have a few girls on our team that are super athletes and they play basketball, softball, etc.. but their first touch and control on the ball is horrible. I see that over and over at this age. Little control, booting it wildly and just over all bad touch and control on the ball. My DD is a super athlete and the best ball handler on her team and she is 9 almost 10. she has to back off of her passes to players knowing that that they can't handle them. I watch older U14+ LH D1 girls with worse first touches and I wonder what happened? Why didn't they train exclusively on the basics of ball control. I see this as a major issue in youth soccer.

I can see cross-training other sports like track, lacrosse, volleyball at an older age of 13-14 once they have developed and somewhat have mastered the footskills needed to be a top level footballer.
