I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you could put a team of squirrels out there to get beaten every week in the highest division but they shouldn't get any points unless they gets some ties or wins in there. Anybody can get their butt beat by the better teams, it doesn't mean you're a good team. If the #4 team beats you 5-0, it doesn't matter if you are the #10 team in DFW or the #55 team, you shouldn't be getting points for it. Give points for merit, not for getting your butt kicked.
Agreed. You are what your record says you are. You may lose 2-0 or 6-0 and in both cases have been dominated in a game. To get points for losses SOS or not is coddling. I'm glad you put in the time to put the rankings together for our amusement.

Not always true. If you have a chance, go look at the 02 FBRs from fall and the new ones. Use my DD's team TFC 02 (was Elite) as an example. They had a losing season in the fall--never won, tied some--playing the top teams both in league play and tournaments. A few blow outs against the very top teams and then some close games and ties the rest of the time, but no wins. They hung steadily in the top 20 I believe. After that first season of 11 v 11 and a solidified roster and practices, they now are enjoying a winning season in the TGPL silver division. They are ranked in the top 12. Having been able to watch many more games, I think that's about right for them.
And just a comment on the flip side to yours, you can also lose 2-0 and actually dominate the game sometimes--not fun If you'll give the system some time to work, it appears that it does turn out to be a fairly accurate ranking--at least good enough to give you a decent idea of where teams are going into qualifying.
And I've got to say another thanks to BWgophers for doing the rankings for 04s even though you don't have one

WTF!!! Help me to understand here. So you are saying if I had a team and we only played the top 25 teams and happen to pull off two wins, am I still considered a top 25 team???? I saw a team with a 2-11-3 record ranked #25. There is no legit Man or Computerized system will have any team with that type of record still in Top 25 regardless of who they played. Actually, my DD is an 05 playing on an 05 team so I have no puppy dog in this hunt... thanks for asking though.
And, for the record, I think these rankings are very accurate and while some teams are probably a little low it will all work out as more game are played. It's really basic math folks... statistical power comes from increased sample size. So let's see how these rankings look after a tournament or two where hopefully the top 15 to 20 teams will face each other.
Let me conclude with this... GREAT JOB bwgophers... keep up the great work!
p.s. Is it Miller Time yet? I think it's getting close. Real close.

Real accurate. Right now at this age, prob should not use that word when talking about rankings. Did I read correctly that Juventus 04G got credit for a win over an 04 team even though they had older players with them? Sounds like a sure fired flawless system

Nah. What about teams that use '05s? Heck, I know of an '04 team in the top 20 that even uses an '06 when playing Gold 04 teams! Should they get bonus points for winning? Of course not. Everyone should just relax... last time I checked National Team tryouts for these girls don't start for a few years.

Mathematical Based Rankings (FBR, SRS, PowerRankings, etc...):
Strengths: Driven by data so they are generally less subjective and more impartial, more balanced representation over time. Don't "knee-jerk" react to a single game result.
Weaknesses: Typically can't apply head-to-head logic. Can not take into account "intangibles" such as guest players, "quality" of play in the game (i.e. not all 2-0 games are alike), key players missing due to injury/conflict, etc. Can be slow to respond to a team that shows a sudden positive or negative change in performance.
Opinion Based Rankings (Human Poll):
Strengths: Can incorporate Head-to-Head logic and intangibles easily. Tend to weight most recent results more heavily.
Weaknesses: Prone to subjectivity, downright "homerism", and even "groupthink". Tend to weigh most recent results more heavily so tend to reflect more "What have you done for me lately?" vs. a balanced assessment over several weeks of games. Prone to "knee-jerk" reactions to a particularly good/bad single game result for a team.
No single system is perfect. Want the best of both worlds? Do both types and average them together. The final result still won't be perfect, but if done right, will converge to a better and more accurate consensus.

Not older players, they had one 03 and it was an 03 division so
no law against it. 04 teams shouldn't register to play in 03 divisions
if they DO NOT expect to play against 03's (whether that 03 is guest playing
or not), maybe they should rethink registering in an 03 division next time.
Here's a thought the team just might face a whole team of 03's, lose
and then what? In tournaments teams use guest players all the time. Yes
it's a known fact that Juventus 04 played with the one 03 because
the Coach was expecting to play in the Gold division. How many other
04 teams use other aged players in tournaments and/or league play?
How many other 04 team use guest players and get factored into this
so called ranking? What exactly is your point? Just because no one isn't
pointing it out on a soccer forum, doesn't mean it doesn't happen EVERY WEEKEND.
If you read back through several other threads, you will see where other teams
admit to using guest players, younger and older. Don't see you calling any of
them out. Some of you act as if Juve used an 03 in an 04 division of a tournament.
Geesh, get a grip.
Nice job BW, thanks for putting it together because I know it can be time consuming.
I am sure several of the top 15 teams use guest players from time to time and
that win/loss has also been factored into this ranking.

Re: '04 FBR Rankings - 04-11-12
i think its great gophers has even bothered to do this for the 04s. the system actually does work pretty good in the long run, but it could be a while before it gets respectable; once the age group starts to settle a bit.
there are detailed explanations of the calculations and all past rankings here www.ntxsoccer.net

I don't think you understand the point. There is not an issue with playing against a team with an 03, especially in an 03 age group. But as far as rankings go, the 04 team with the older player gets credit for the win as an 04 team against an 04 team as if there was no older player. Don't see how that is going to be accurate in the rankings. The 04 team that took the loss is not accurate either. Its one thing to have guest players of the same age, but when its an older player.... An 04 team losing to an 03 team doesn't go toward the rankings. Why should it be any different when a its an 04 team with any older players?
