Let me flip it around another way. What about those parents who call, text or email a coach who is across town multiple times with intentions of coming out to an open practice, extolling the virtues of their kid, but never show up only to then "commit" to a team right in their own area? Why not honor the expressed intention? Why do the okey-doke?

This may work out as intended, but our experience has been different. Every year, the "target" roster size is less than the maximum number. But every year, one or two more players show up just before signing day, and the roster is maxed out.

I am curious if the coaches who are saying they will cap roster at 15-16 actually do that after all the signing is complete or was it just something said during tryouts to give parents the warm fuzzies.  Keep us posted on that RWD.

I love the wheeler dealer parents who want to buddy up with every coach they can find.  It does not matter what part of town they are in, that parent wants to make sure the coach knows that his/her DD is available and in return, wants the DD to feel wanted by each and every coach.  And then the okey-doke, that parent has no intention of driving across town to join that team, just loves thinking that they are being "recruited."

Hmm knk, let's look at it from a different view. Lets say you are buying a car. You call around and talk to different dealerships. Each one is eager to get you to buy. After promising to come our to see what they have, you find one at a dealership five minutes from your home with pretty much an identical deal so to save time, money and headaches, you buy from them. Meanwhile do you call back to each dealership and tell them that you are buying from a closer one? Etiquette says you should, but we humans rarely think of that in our eagerness to move on to that new car.

Ina - although I agree that as a parent, you should definitely approach select soccer from the consumer perspective, I think it's different from the car buying example for this reason: If you have given the coach the impression that you are coming to their team, they may need to cut a little girl to make room for yours. Coach/Car Salesman be damned...but let the coach know you aren't interested and maybe save some tears on a little girl just hoping to stay on the team another year with her friends. Make the call for the little girl, not the coach.

I would agree with you with an exception. If you ask about practice schedules but don't make a commitment to come then I would say there is no need to call if you choose not to come. Also, if a coach cuts a player before her replacement is even seen in action then my thinking is that the coach didn't plan on keeping that player. Of course that is just my logic so it could definitely be wrong. ;-)

Now I can't use the Pixie Ponies name I wanted because we would clash....darn!! I hope all players that truly love the game, and want to play, find the right situation for them this season.

I agree...if you just ask about practices, but don't show up...no need to call. If you have attended more than one practice...then let them know if you are not interested.

It seems like every team just needs a keeper, couple of defenders and a speedy forward to complete the roster.  They all have a good mid-field.

Midfield is where the short, slow, pre-pubescent kids go. Right now every team needs a couple of big fast kids that can kick the ball far. No skills required or taught in some cases.

Hi Sho, I think many teams feel if they have a Hope Solo and a couple of defenders along with speed of light forwards the mid-field is just there for show. Very Happy

When the coach says they like to play through the midfield, they really mean ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

We must be thinking about the same parent(s)..lol Now could be that said parent knows in their gut that if they did honor the expressed intention(s) that they'd find out that DD is really not all that wanted..

Pretty good description of the approach.

And what does the USWNT have none of, other than the possibly the youngest player on the team?

In NTX some coaches don't like to play the traditional 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. I mean, what coach in his or her right mind would want to waste time on the small and slow mids? Since midfielders aren't needed at a young age then you will see the much BETTER 5-0-5 or 4-1-5 formations. Of course, the "1" in the 4-1-5 is really just another defender playing really high to further boot the ball up to the 5 forwards in case the 4 wookies in the back didn't "send it" quite far enough! Lol!

Heck why bother to even waste time to go ALL THE WAY THROUGH when you can just go OVER THE TOP. It's called direct play, you know.

Another posting thought... Why post that you are only looking for say a "forward"? What if the best defender from club X shows up to tryouts? What then? Sorry, we are only looking for forwards. scratch

What exactly is an impact player any way? Someone who makes plays? Someone who can beat up on the other team? What are you looking for?

I consider it a player that affects the result, often times swinging the result.

Good luck finding that player 3 days before signing. Luckily my team is posting open sessions daily until tryouts. So I'm pretty sure we will find someone else's bench player who will be our new "Impact Player".
