Good luck finding that player 3 days before signing. Luckily my team is posting open sessions daily until tryouts. So I'm pretty sure we will find someone else's bench player who will be our new "Impact Player".

An impact player, is a player that removes your daughter's teeth from her elbow and offers them back to your daughter.....after she regains consciousness.

Indeed! In the '05 realm, I am hearing the big clubs will have these "open sessions" with several coaches being present while several teams are all there. Of course, most of the girls are there to hopefully land the spot with the "top team" but outside of those best 11-12 girls there is a lot of unknown and uncertainty. I feel like the big clubs do this semi-purposely too. Keep those kiddos around that are close to the top and then on signing day (or the day before) spring the switcheroo on them that you really want them to be a part of Club X but just not the top one. HOWEVER, your daughter has now met and worked with "Coach Second-Team" and his/her girls for the last few sessions. We think you'd be an even BETTER fit with them...sign here please. All the while there are even better, BETTER fits for these girls outside of Club X but because of this tactic the girls may have missed the opportunity to see what else is truly out there.
sneaky, Sneaky, SNEAKY
I am pretty sure it happened to the 04's last year and will happen again for the 06's next year.
(oh, and I totally get why they are doing it. Makes perfect sense from a $$$ standpoint; and, if little Susie DOES grow into that next star she is already there for the picking from Coach Second-Team's group)

I don't consider it sneaky at all. Clubs are going to do what's best for the club. That should be obvious.

Re: Teams posting open practices daily
Kids desperate to make the team being manipulated by coaches. Told that they are "on the bubble - just keep coming to our practices every day" - afraid if they miss a practice to see if there is anything else, they will miss their "chance" (and made impossible by the coach to check out other teams by holding daily practices).
We're not talking about players who really are on the bubble - we're talking about players who have no chance (short of 75% of the "selected team" not showing up on July 1).
These players will then feel they have nowhere else to turn on July 2, except back to the club that has manipulated them to begin with.
Sad

Zizou wrote:Plus, the big clubs are not holding practice every day. They just know most parents out their are niev and anxious to get through tryouts and get on a team. It's like the car sales man who holds your trade in keys so you can't leave and as your walking out the door telling you that you will miss out on the deal of a lifetime if you do not buy now. Humans are all impulsive and in situations can be sold something because they are impulsive or ignorant to the game.
Tell that to the kids who were told to show up for practice every day - which are being held to prevent kids from looking. These are kids the coach has had weeks to evaluate - but he still can't figure out if they are good enough for his team.
I am talking about kids who would be more suited for a PPL D2 or D3 team and have no chance to earn playing time on a PPL D1 team trying for LH - except to cover the coach's butt (and check) if parents realize at the last minute that the emperor has no clothes, and follow their teammates to greener pastors
Not saying that there can't be kids on the bubble, but to try and hold them in by holding daily practices under the "pretense" of evaluation - when he has been watching the kids for a month? Is it really that difficult to pare down the list?
Lack of character and borderline incompetence.

Re: Teams posting open practices daily
Parents desperate for Suzy to be on a certain team - sold by the coach on dreams of what could be - while more objective parents (namely, all those not Suzy's parents) see that there is no chance (and breathe a sigh of relief that at least their kid is ahead of Suzy on "the bubble").

jibjab2 wrote:Are you saying that you think the coach bears no responsibility for the used car salespitch on a player who has absolutely NO business being on his team?
It may be that both are responsible.
I think that if coaches haven't given you any feedback after a few practices, then either you should ask directly or take the hint and start seeking out alternatives.
To be fair to coaches, they might honestly be waiting to see if a girl has just had a mediocre practice or if she is just consistently mediocre. On the other hand, it is not fair to keep stringing along parents in hope that someone else better will show up late in the game or just have a body for the paycheck.
It is still is incumbent on the parents to be looking at all alternatives anyway.

Less than $1000 here.
Half our costs are for field usage.
Sometimes it not just about making money.

You know it's a cold day in Hades when I'm agreeing with both Zizou and C&R...
Caveat Emptor
(p.s. Be their parent first. Be objective and act in their best interest. You've got plenty of time to be their #1 fan after July 1st.)
