Re: 96-Regionals
Kids practiced for an hour at night and seemed very loose (Sting 96). Highlight was the ride back home with California Girls blaring while they screamed the lyrics. That made the whole trip worthwile already. Looking forward to tomorrow and opening ceremonies and LSU's campus (never been there). Why am I posting........Socrocks suggested I should, so there you have it.

That rocks! Thanks for keeping us updated. I expect more tomorrow.Suddenimpact wrote:Day One at Regionals: Took the day to drive down from Dallas. In spite of all the warnings on how long of a trip it was, I made it in 6 hours flat including the time I was stopped in East Texas for going 85 (15 over the speed limit). Um...no ticket, thank you very much. Oops, maybe that explains my record time. I am looking forward to seeing the nice parts of Baton Rouge...so far they have escaped me. Hotel check-in was a nightmare...made all of us wait until 3:00pm, seemed a little counter-intuitive when they opened the floodgates. Ran into Gunners at the local Piggly Wiggly (really). They keep their liquor under lock and key at the grocery stores. We had to find somebody with the key to open the department (really).

Yes, some part of Louisiana still have Piggly Wigglys and yes the liquor is under lock and key but the point of that story should be that grocery stores actually carry liquor!!! You dont see that her in Texas!!
Hope you guys do well and enjoy the trip.

Gunners always hangs in the hot spots. Was he cruising the panty hose aisle?
Now that you secured you liquor stash, you probably ought to use it....BR will look a lot better to you.
Dallas happenings....HOT, no rain in sight, no new roster clarity.
Keep the info coming and good luck to the Texas girls tomorrow.

Boy, I haven't seen a Piggly Wiggly in a long time. Best name ever.96Guru wrote:Yes, some part of Louisiana still have Piggly Wigglys and yes the liquor is under lock and key but the point of that story should be that grocery stores actually carry liquor!!! You dont see that her in Texas!!

Don't forget about the other great thing Louisiana has. Drive thru daiquiri shops! I won't be pulling into Baton Rouge until around 1am, since I'm leaving after work. I may have to forgo the daiquiri until Friday.

Re: 96-Regionals
Our day was very similar to SI's, but we did get to practice at LSU. Their facilities left a lot to be desired, which was surprising for an SEC school.
Looking forward to opening ceremonies and seeing some soccer. Hopefully we'll be able to mix in some good food and spirits in the meantime.

What is your alarm passcode, where's the key to the liquor cabinet and where is the DVD remote?

96 Regionals
Day 2 - Region III Championships:
First off, my jumping the gun on BR was a little unfair. Spent time today around other parts of the city and it was very impressive. Lots of great places to shop, eat and hang out near I10 and the LSU campus, which, btw was very cool. Okay, the LSU mystique....I get it. When you see Mike the Tiger's palatial den and go into Pistol Pete's auditorium, you are sold. Side note: When I was kid playing basketball (yea, no soccer), I wore Pistol Pete socks to practice almost every day.
The opening ceremonies were a lot of fun for the girls and quite majestic. The t-shirt trade was a big hit with the girls.....and I think I scored an Arsenal Elite shirt that was too big for my daughter. The juggling competition was very cool and there were two boys and one girl that were sick. Oh, that's good if you were wondering in today's venacular. Speakers were incredibly okay, but they kept it to a modicum, so no probs. LSU fans.....ingress and egress are not your friends, but they rarely are on college campuses.
Spent the morning at practice with the girls and I have decided that someone is going to melt this week, much like the Wicked Witch of the East (it was East wasn't it?). I spent 15 minutes kicking the ball around with one of the player's little brother, and I am now taking IVs. Not really, but if Hunter S. Thompson could pull it off, why not try. We kick off at 10:00am tomorrow versus a team from Georgia, probably our hardest test in the bracket and a very tell tale sign on whether we will advance. The only thing dripping more than the players are the rumors of what may come post Regionals, but I have been at this long enough not to get too caught up in the drama. Saw friends from both Solar and Texans today......you know what, for all of the insanity of it, there are some really great soccer parents out there. Just my two cents......

Re: 96-Regionals
Now the waiting is over. Once again, good luck to all of the Texas teams. Full updates on all of the games please.
We also expect a report on the "daiquiris of the day." Now that you've seen the town and aside from a couple of hours of soccer each day....you'll have plenty of time for sampling. For the record...."real men" get a free pass on daiquiri drinking while visiting Baton Rouge.

Re: 96-Regionals
Lots of tension as we finally hit the field for our first bracket game. Assumed that this would be the toughest match given recent results of the other bracket teams. AFC Lightning is a very good team and was very physical. Unfortunately for them, this is something we see week in and week out in NTX. They did set a record for most slide tackles in a game (31), breaking the previous record held by Colorado Rush Nike 91 at 29. We ended up winning 3-0 and had one additional goal called offsides (correctly). Actually thought it should have been closer. They had two players I would take on my squad any day. Kids handled the heat surprisingly well. I thought we looked pretty good. I spent most of the second half taunting our team with my collection of Slush Puppies and Italian Ices that I purchased at halftime.
Heard that Texans beat the Mississippi State Champ 6-0. Really? So, every week we analyze what's wroing with our teams (insert Feet, FC, Solar, Sting, Texans, etc.) when everytime we cross a border we beat another state champ. This was true for my '87 and '91. We are so jaundiced in NTX. Just move any of the top 5 teams to Idaho, Missouri or Georgia and you can be a State Champ too! Heard (and I mean heard first hand) that Solar beat their opponent 3-1. Think we may end up playing them in the Quarters....don't want to. They always scare me.......
